Google Chrome extensions can be incredibly useful things, but the fact that they work on an all-or-nothing basis doesn’t seem particularly secure. The good news is that Chrome may get an upgrade that will add more privacy to actions.
As spotted by a Reddit user u/Leopeva64-2 (Opens in a new tab)It looks like Google is in the process of redesigning the Chrome Extensions menu. One of the new options in this redesign appears to be the ability to block all extensions from a specific site, similar to the “Pause all extensions on this site” feature in Microsoft Edge.
The browser extensions you got from the Chrome Store should be fairly safe, there are still a lot of places you don’t want to risk it. You can never know where these pieces of software came from, or what information they might collect.
The last thing you want is to risk the chance of your sensitive information being dumped – whether it’s passwords, banking details, or something else entirely. All because you wanted to block ads or get to your email a little faster.
Chromium Code suggests that this option will be kept in the extension menu, which can be found to the right of the address bar. However, it doesn’t look like you’ll be able to pick and choose which plugins are active on a particular site. Alternatively, you can either enable all extensions or none, with no compromise option. But it would be nice to see this feature arrive in the future, especially if the extension only works on a few sites.
Presumably, you’ll still be able to disable individual extensions, just as you can now. This way it will be inactive on all websites until you decide otherwise.
Unfortunately, this feature is still under development, and it is not yet available to the public. sleeping computer (Opens in a new tab) The feature could not be turned on in Chrome beta either, which indicates that this may be an A/B test.
In short, this feature may not be available for some time and we’ll just have to wait and see what’s involved if and when it reaches the public version of Chrome.
