About 20 to 30 minutes after the first attack, the gunman entered the Lai Lai Ballroom in the nearby city of Alhambra. But people pulled the gun off him and witnesses said he escaped in a white van, according to Luna.

“He walked in there with a firearm and some individuals wrestled the firearm away from him, and that person walked off,” Luna said earlier Sunday.

The truck was found in Torrance, another community with many Asian Americans, about 22 miles from the second location.

Luna said earlier Sunday that law enforcement is dealing with a “hardened suspect situation” in Torrance. Luna said officers stopped a white van at 10:20 a.m. local time on Sunday. The truck then drove into a shopping center parking lot and police heard a single shot from inside the vehicle, according to Luna. Officers wearing tactical gear and body armor approached the truck at 12:52 p.m. and found the suspect dead.

News helicopters captured the dramatic scene of the truck, with several armored vehicles in front, to the side and behind the truck, with officers in broad fatigues and flak jackets in the back of one of the police vehicles. After besieging the vehicle for hours, law enforcement officers burst in and entered it. The body of one appeared to be lying on the steering wheel and was later removed. SWAT team members looked at the truck’s contents before turning away.

When he went out on his early morning walk, Tony Lai, 35, of Monterey Park was shocked to learn that the sounds he had heard in the night were gunshots.

“I thought maybe it was fireworks. I thought maybe it had something to do with the Lunar New Year,” he said. “And we don’t even get a lot of fireworks here. It’s weird to see this. It’s really safe here. We’re downtown, but it’s really safe.”

The massacre sent shock waves through Asian American communities across the country, prompting police from San Francisco to New York to step up patrols for Lunar New Year celebrations in their cities.

Asian American advocacy groups said it was another blow after years of high-profile violence against Asians across the country. “Regardless of the intent, the impact on our community has been truly profound,” said Connie Chung Ju, executive director of Asian American Advancing Justice Southern California.

“Jill and I are thinking of the dead and injured in last night’s deadly mass shooting in Monterey Bar,” Biden said in a statement Sunday evening. “While there is still much we don’t know about the motive behind this senseless attack, we do know that many families are grieving tonight, or praying that their loved ones will recover from their wounds.”

Biden ordered flags to be flown at half-staff until sunset Thursday.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said on Instagram that he visited Monterey Park on Sunday.

“The strength of this community is incredible,” Newsom said. “No other country in the world is so terrorized by this constant stream of gun violence. We need real gun reform on a national level.”

According to CNN, Tran’s ex-wife said that she met Tran about 20 years ago at the Star Ballroom and that “while Tran was never violent with her…he could be quick to anger.” As CNN reported, “a longtime acquaintance of Tran also remembered him as a frequent presence in the dance studio.”

Eyewitnesses identified one of the dead as the owner of the Star Dance studio. CBS Los Angeles reports.

Witnesses killed help Ming Wei Ma in a final act of selflessness.

“According to an (online) conversation, he was the first to rush into the shooting,” said Eric Chen, a friend of Ming’s. “He just cared about, other people first, people first kind of person….” (It’s) heartbreaking and inconceivable that that would happen. “

A local resident Wong Wei told Los Angeles Times His friend was in the dance studio, and she was in the bathroom when the shooting broke out. When she emerged from the bathroom, she saw a gunman and three dead bodies – two women and someone who said he was the studio head.

A GoFundMe account was created “for the many individuals who are now experiencing this senseless violence.”
