Houston, Texas (KTRK) – We tracked a lot of storm damage across southeast Texas on Tuesday after heavy storm surges, gusty winds and tornadoes. Therefore, if your home or business has been damaged by a storm, be careful before you sign with a contractor who promises to fix things.

If your home is damaged, you have to fix things, but you can avoid being ripped off by a bad contractor. Texas lists what they call it Common scams on its website.
They include:
- The contractor requires you to sign something approving of the work before giving you a written estimate for the repairs.
- Don’t sign an empty contract that can later be filled at higher costs.
- Don’t hire a contractor who says he’ll waive your deduction for work in the bid. It is illegal for the contractor to waive a discount or to promise a discount.
- Don’t give the contractor a large down payment or pay in full before the job is done.
- It’s good to work with companies you already know or companies that have been recommended by family or neighbors.
- Ask to see the contractor’s insurance information.
- Make sure to get several estimates before choosing a contractor.
Remember, the state does not issue licenses to roofers, but there is an independent licensing organization called the Texas Roofing Contractors Association. They can help you find a contractor who will do what they promise.
