The DC live-action franchise is at a unique new turning point, now that James Gunn and Peter Safran have stepped in as co-CEOs of newly minted DC Studios. After more than a decade of different, intermittently connected films and TV shows inspired by DC comics, Gunn and Safran set out to unite future projects under a unique DC universe moving forward. There has been a lot of speculation about what this universe will look like, especially with some shows and franchises being rebooted while others may not. While we don’t yet know what DC Studios has in store (although judging by Gunn’s social media posts, we should start finding out sooner rather than later), one argument can be made – the new DC Universe should include Green Arrow. .
Created by Mort Weisinger and George Papp in More fun comics #73, Oliver Queen / Green Arrow has the honor of being one of the most frequently published heroes within DC’s arsenal. Originally a Batman-esque billionaire with an array of shooter skills and gadgets, he’s donned several (proverbial and literal) hats in the years since his creation – whether he’s partnered with Hal Jordan/Green Lantern and Dinah Lance/Black Canary in Hard arc Travel N Heroes in the 1970s, becoming an urban hunter during Mike Grill’s 1980s cartoon, or coming back to life and embracing an existing family in comics by Kevin Smith and Judd Winnick.
Why does the Green Arrow have to appear in the DC Universe?

Let’s be honest – the idea of a rich white guy who fights crime without superpowers is certainly nothing new in superhero fantasy. Mainly general audiences have grown to expect this story from a dozen or so Batman adaptations. Although Batman is expected to have some role in Gunn and Safran’s DCU, it’s safe to assume he won’t be as prominent as he will be in Matt Reeves’ standalone movie. Batman being. Instead, that role could easily be filled in the larger DCU – in a more lighthearted, socially conscious context – with Green Arrow. In a sense, Oliver’s view of the DCU could be more relevant than ever, with so many hit movies about rich people getting their sequels, and Elon Musk continuing to make waves in nearly every business he owns. The only difference is that Oliver, in theory, could be in on the joke.
How could the Green Arrow appear in the DC Universe?
While there’s no indication if Green Arrow could end up in Gunn and Safran’s early plans for a central console, it’s certainly not outside the realm of possibility. Gunn has openly admitted that Green Arrow was his favorite character as a child, making a memorable joke in the Season 1 finale of peace maker proves that he is indeed in some capacity (and may or may not be Brunei). Going forward, it’s safe to assume that the DCU will include both A-listers like Superman and Wonder Woman, and previously unknown characters like Peacemaker and Bloodsport – but the franchise also needs likable and complex B-listers like Green Arrow, to advance further. The universe feels as physical as it does in the comics.
And honestly, there’s no shortage of places Green Arrow could appear hypothetically in the DCU – a solo project, an adaptation of “Hard Travelin’ Heroes,” or something else entirely. Before Jin and Safran take over, rumors have been circulating that Oliver could appear in Jurnee Smollett’s car. Black Canary Bird movie, something that could happen if the project continues to be in development in the new DCU. Of course, Green Arrow’s long stint as a member of the Justice League in the comics could easily lead to him appearing in a new live-action iteration of the team, once DC Studios can move on from the Zack Snyder iteration. Either way, Oliver Queen could – and, frankly, be a part of whatever the DC Universe has in store for the future.
