Netflix loves to drop new shows adapting beloved young adult fantasy books. Lockwood & Co. is the latest series in this style, and it appears to be a hit on two fronts already.
The series, which adapts Jonathan Stroud’s supernatural YA series, will likely benefit from those books – which gave it a built-in audience on day one. Lockwood & Co. declined. At the end of last month, on January 27, and (according to the show’s ranking tracker FlixPatrol (Opens in a new tab)), it had jumped to number three in the US by the twenty-eighth.
It then jumped to second place for a while, though it’s back in third place for now, as seen on the Netflix homepage. However, FlixPatrol says it’s the number one show overall on Netflix right now, only slightly ahead of The Snow Girl.
But none of that says you have to watch Lockwood & Co tonight, does it? So, let’s break down everything you need to know.
What is Netflix’s Lockwood & Co.?
Lockwood & Co. With an inspiring premise: In a world filled with supernatural entities, three teens embark on a ghost hunting operation. These guys – Lucy Carlyle (Ruby Stokes), Anthony Lockwood (Cameron Chapman) and George Karim (Ali Haji Hashmati) exist as a countermeasure to the paranormal investigation industrial complex.
While outlets run by adults may have more financial backing and expertise, Lucy, Anthony and George have goodwill on their side. But the series begins with Lucy as the latest “hire” at Lockwood & Co. , after I found an ad. Once she signed up, she discovered that every other agency in London looked down on her group of amateurs. Check out the trailer:
Lockwood is both eccentric and charismatic, and keeps his secrets in a forbidden room. George is his super-intelligent, kind of tough sidekick and Robbie… well, she’s the hero of it all.
One thing the trailer doesn’t make clear – but does describe – is that Lucy has psychic abilities. Specifically, she can detect the presence of ghosts, with her own version of Peter Parker’s Spidey sense.
Lockwood & Co. Reviews: What the Critics Are Saying
Lockwood & Co. Currently looking impressive 89% Rotten Tomatoes score (Opens in a new tab), but there is an asterisk. It was derived from only nine reviews at the time of publication. We’re guessing critics aren’t in a rush to review this YA adaptation.
However, the reviews are very positive. Boyd Hilton review 4 out of 5 stars for empire (Opens in a new tab) “Forget the YA tag,” she advises, “this is an addictive, sophisticated supernatural thriller that will keep cynical old pranksters entertained all the time.”
Jenna Shearer in av club (Opens in a new tab) Lockwood & Co. says: , “Unlike many of his peers…it feels like you’re living in it; it’s easy to believe you’re stepping into a world that’s actually been there for a while. It’s shabby and chic, like an old coat hidden in the back of a thrift store.” She also notes that while that “there are plenty of truly eerie ghost encounters, boisterous sword fights, and genre jargon… Cornish’s series stands out for its patient action.”
Jonathon Wilson Cut ready and firm (Opens in a new tab) He says Lockwood & Co is “stylish and atmospheric British teen fantasy” with “a strong sense of character, economical storytelling, buzzy action and a truly compelling world”.
Outlook: Maybe you should watch Lockwood & Co.
I’m not one for fantasy, which is why I can’t get into several popular video games (it took me 5 clicks to click with Breath of the Wild) and some recent hit TV shows (The Wheel of Time isn’t for me). However, I have already added Lockwood & Co. to my waiting list.
why? Because it focuses on character building in a bleak and unpolished world. Oftentimes, these shows revolve around their super cute characters and personal drama. Lockwood & Co. is looking forward. To offer a great alternative.
