James Norton blew up TV screens across the country as he portrayed Tommy Lee Royce in the BBC drama Happy Valley. But when he didn’t get away with murder, he was at the forefront of the James Bond conversation. The British heartthrob is currently one of the favorites in Bond prospects – and he’s previously opened up about bringing some much-needed nuance to the role.
Norton has been candid about his chances on Bond in 2021 as Daniel Craig is about to step down from the series. His exit followed his fifth and final performance as Bond, James Bond, in No Time To Die.
When asked what he would achieve in the role, the 37-year-old explained that he would consider inserting a piece of his real life into the Superspy character.
“I have type 1 diabetes,” he explained. “How cool is it to have a diabetic bond?”
This was not the idea for him to just inject himself into the role. He noted that giving Bond a new side would be a way to inspire children around the world who are just like him.
Norton certainly did his homework too, noting Bond’s bosses’ last-minute appointment of writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge during the production of No Time To Die.
“It was very smart to bring in people like Phoebe Waller-Bridge as a consultant on the last film,” he concluded. “And I’m really excited to see what you bring to him.”
At the time of writing, Bond’s odds have placed Norton at the top of the pyramid. He is currently second to Ladbrokes, taking 3/1. He is only being beaten at the moment by UK favorite Henry Cavill, who has an impressive 5/2.
Jessica O’Reilly of Ladbrokes said, “After the police escape in Happy Valley, fans of James Norton would love to see him deal with 007 after Daniel Craig’s departure.”
Considering that the final episode of Happy Valley will be on TV this Sunday at 9 p.m., Norton will be out of a job very soon. He doesn’t have many things on his list in the coming years, so Bond bosses Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson could certainly be eyeing his way soon. However, he will have to overcome not only Cavill, but also some other heavyweights; Including Aaron Taylor-Johnson (3/1) and Reggie Jean Page (1/10).
The final episode of Happy Valley arrives on BBC One on Sundays at 9pm.
