Netflix’s Freeridge will feel instantly familiar, even if you’ve never seen On My Block, the show you’re all about. This is because it uses some standard Netflix elements: teens deal with supernatural elements while also dealing with real life, while in high school.
Freeridge looks like a show that could earn a spot on our list of the best shows on Netflix, and it’s already climbing the Netflix special lists. Freeridge (according to FlixPatrol (Opens in a new tab)), ranked fourth on Netflix’s Top 10 Shows in the US list on February 3, the day after it hit the service.
Then, on Saturday (February 4), Freeridge climbed to No. 3 on that list, and is now at No. 4. And the surnames above (New Amsterdam, Jenny, Georgia, and Wednesday) are all more established.
But none of that says you have to watch Freeridge tonight, does it? So, let’s break down everything you need to know.
What is Netflix’s Freeridge, and do you need to see On My Block?
The good news is that we can answer that last question quickly and easily: No, you don’t need to see On My Block.
Set in the hometown of On My Block, Freeridge revolves around a new mystery faced by sisters Gloria (Keyla Monterroso Mejia) and Ines (Bryana Salaz), as well as their friends Demi (Ciara Riley Wilson) and Cam (Tenzing Norgay Trainor). The only mystery first though is, “Why the hell are Gloria and Ennis fighting?” Despite this, the trailer below gets you to answer quickly, with quite a bit of delay.
A funny new high school comedy where everyone is kind of a misfit, you might have a hard time figuring out who your favorite is. I immediately jumped at Gloria, remembering Mejia from both the recent Abbott Elementary and Curb Your Enthusiasm seasons.
The big story that tracks throughout Freeridge, though, isn’t mentioned in the trailer. The gang finds a mysterious box, which they believe is cursed. Unfortunately for everyone, the box is opened, and mayhem ensues.
Freeridge Reviews: What the Critics Are Saying
Freeridge may be doing well in the top 10 right now, but critical audiences still consider it somewhat of a hidden gem, as the reviews aren’t as plentiful as one might hope. For example, Rotten tomatoes (Opens in a new tab) Only seven ratings pulled from the show’s 86% score.
However, these reviews are very positive. Angie Han at Hollywood Reporter (Opens in a new tab) He writes that Freeridge does well by giving Mejia the space to show “she’s a talented physical comedian who can elicit hearty laughter with an exaggerated facial expression or a goofy dance move,” as well as “the chance to also show off her dramatic range, her irrepressible energy in anger or grief.” “.
Quinci LeGardye In av club (Opens in a new tab) notes that Freeridge is for current and novice On My Block fans alike, writing “Freeridge is a real treat for OMB fans who also claim its status as a raucous, boisterous teen comedy in its own right”. She also notes that “Freeridge excels when it explores the courage within vulnerability and the more mundane form of resilience, with its emotional, heart-wrenching scenes involving conversations about life and death in the characters’ kitchens. It’s hard to balance heightened comedy with inherent drama, and Freeridge’s creative team does a solid job.” in giving both modes equal weight.”
LeGardye also writes that it isn’t put together perfectly, noting that “some of the character developments and changes in motivation hit too quickly, and the season’s Curse arc gets weaker as the endless twists and turns lead to a climactic counterproductive.”
Joel Keller comma (Opens in a new tab) He declares that “Like On My Block, Freeridge is an enjoyable show about a tight group of friends dealing with some strange happenings in their neighborhood. Strong character development and confident displays of leadership make the show a very easy watch.”
Outlook: We’re excited to see Freeridge
Freeridge looks like a fun watch, and while it’s a very familiar YA/supernatural mix, Mejia has enough rising star that we’re willing to give this series a try to see more of her.
However, the smells of the aforementioned stories make Freeridge seem like a show that won’t impress even the most demanding viewers. For those, I recommend Poker Face, which has been getting five for five so far.
