Fire Emblem Engage: Top 10 Character Skills

Spoiler warning: This list contains units that are not available from the start of the game. Some units are unlocked throughout the game, which can spoil part of the story.

To get the upper hand on the battlefield, you need to boost your units’ fighting skills. In Fire Emblem Engage, particularly in the hard settings, it is important that you plan your battle strategy around the use of your units’ skills. Starting with unit selection and then continuous positioning on the battlefield, you must make your choices about maximizing your units’ skills.

Skills can provide stat buffs, eliminate an enemy, or add a unique mechanic. Each unit comes with one character skill pre-equipped and does not change throughout the game. These powerful skills add unique bonuses to your combat if you execute your battle plan a certain way.

10 Anna – do the killing

FE Engage Anna Skill-1

With money on her mind at all times, Anna has the perfect interpersonal skill to grow your wealth. Make a Killing gives Anna a chance to get 500g when she defeats an enemy (caused by her luck stat).

Especially in the early part of the game, this can provide you much needed currency to boost your efforts. If you are distributing Emblem Rings, Anna is best paired with the Byleth crest due to the luck boost. The Sensei’s ring can give Anna a great chance to make a killing.

9 Clanne, Framme, and Vander

FE Engage Clanne Frame Vander Skill

This entry is a bit different, but Clanne, Framme, and Vander all have similar benefits. As Dragon Guardians, these three units all have a personal skill that enables them in addition to the Divine Dragon. When next to Alear, these skills grant Hit +10, Avo +10, or Crit +5, respectively.

Since they never leave Divine Dragons’ side, these Personal Skills all require the unit to be next to Alear in combat. Whether you need more Offense or Defense, choose one of these three to fight alongside Alear at all times.

8 Yonaka – Practice killing

FE Engage Yunaka Skill

The thief Yunaka is willing to steal and trained to kill. Her personal skill gives her Crit +15 when she stands on a square where Avo gives her a bonus. Terrains such as Thicket, Woods, and Pillars give any unit occupying these locations an Avo +30.

There are quite a few Terrain tiles that grant Avo, so find these locations and plot a course for Yunaka’s travel. If you manage to stay on these squares throughout the battle, your Crit +15 bonus will be free.

7 Citrine – generosity

FE engaging skill Citrine

Healing is an important mechanic in Fire Emblem Engage, as it gives your units more power to stay on the battlefield. Losing an ally in combat, whether you’re in classic or casual mode, can be devastating to your campaign.

Citrinne and her generosity of personal skill can help keep your units alive. When a Citrinne uses a healing item, nearby units will also restore the gained HP. This makes Citrinne the best candidate for potpourri and elixirs. Make sure they hold your healing tools, as they become healing areas of effect when used.

6 Mirren – Knight Escort

FE engaging skill Mirren

Honorable Knight Merrin excels in battle when traveling with a group. When there are 2 or more allies in 2 spaces, Merrin gives himself and those units Hit/Avo +5. Merrin’s default class is the Knight-type Wolf Knight, so make sure you don’t get outmatched by your squadron.

Additional Unit 2 requirements do not hinder this skill; enabled by it. By allowing Merin to color all allies around him, this skill scales in power with each additional unit nearby. If you are going to play Merrin, keep him near your female units.

5 Timerra – Soulm Racket

FE Engaging Timerra skill

Similar to Merrin and Citrinne, Timerra also has a strong personal skill sphere of influence. The Crit-5 Solom Bat strikes all enemies within 3 spaces. This is an incredible ability as it can affect a large number of enemies and, at times, can even drop from a safe distance.

While most of the skills on this list boost your team with a powerful offensive ability, Racket of Solm is just as powerful in its ability to reduce damage. In many cases, being seriously hit by the enemy could be disastrous. It always pays to reduce your chance of getting a serious hit.

4 Jean – experience

FE Engage Jan Scheele

Jin has the perfect skill to build strength over time. With all the units, leveling up provides a huge stat boost that makes them more powerful in battle. Experience grants Jin improved stat growth as he levels up, which boosts the gains he receives over the course of his career.

If you take in side objectives like Skirmishes and Paralogues, units can level up over 40 times during their journey. Gene could see huge benefits from his personal skill if he was on your starting list consistently.

3 Seadall – curious dance

FE engaging Seadall's skill

The best healing skill in the game belongs to Sedall, The Curious Dance. This skill causes all nearby allies within two spaces to recover 10% of their max HP at the start of each round. This can be vital to keeping units on the battlefield.

Being superior to your units at full health can change the flow of battle – whether you can push forward or have to hold back and be determined by your units’ HP. When positioned correctly, Seadall will keep the odds in your favor.

2 Elephant – protection from falling

The skill of engaging in an elephant

With Veyle on your starting list, you get a balanced character skill on your side. Fall Protection not only deals adjacent allies +1 damage, but also protects them from 3 less damage per attack. This skill contributes to a lot of extra damage dealt and avoided.

As long as you can side with Veyle, her character skill gives you great benefits. While the range and number of allies affected is limited, this skill can be worth playing. Fell protection alone is enough to secure Veyle a spot in their starting unit selection.

1 Aliar – Inspired by God

FE Engage Alear Skill

You might have already guessed it, but Alear has the best character skill in the game. Unlike Phil’s skill, Divine Inspiration grants nearby allies +3 damage dealt and 1 damage taken less. As with Fell Protection, this character skill is incredibly powerful. There are a number of units that have the ability to multi-hit and counterattack, which makes this personal skill an enormous damage deal.

Alear should always have unity on both sides. With an ally on each hip, Divinely Inspired will create opportunities to take down enemies with more regularity. The +3 damage is especially effective if paired with other character skills, class or emblem that increase the unit’s attack frequency.
