Tom Jones defies backlash to perform a hit again | music | entertainment

For more than 55 years, anyone who hears OTT’s unapologetic Delilah has joined the epic chorus. Just a few years ago, Sir Tom Jones chanted the song to the entire nation at the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations outside Buckingham Palace – which Princes Harry, Andrew and Edward watched with Sophie Wessex. The royal family and the crowds alike gathered with him shouted the sentence, “My, my, my, my, Delilah!” The star himself has spoken of his pride in the number, saying “I love hearing her sing at rugby games. It makes me so proud to be Welsh.” So what’s the problem?

Most of us probably know most of the opening lines, “I saw the light the night I passed her window
I saw the faint shadows of love upon her blindness. He paused to take a deep breath and then the big, “It was my woman…”

What happens next that’s the problem. The song tells the story of a suffocating man who takes revenge on his cheating girlfriend. And lately, people have been looking closely at how drawn she is.

Back in 2015, The Welsh Rugby Union removed Delilah from their half-time music playlist, then a complete ban shocked fans last month.

The Welsh Rugby Union has banned fans from singing the song at all during any of their matches. An official statement said: “WRU removed the song from its entertainment and halftime music playlist during international matches in 2015. Guest choirs were also recently asked not to feature the song during their pre-match performances and during matches.

WRU condemns domestic violence of any kind. We have previously sought subject matter expert advice on the issue of censoring the song and we respectfully understand that it is problematic and upsetting to some supporters because of its subject matter.”

The problem stems from the second half of the song when the angry, rejected lover is revealed to be holding a knife and what happens next.

The song reads: “I crossed the street to her house and opened the door. She just stood there laughing. I felt the knife in my hand and she didn’t laugh anymore.”

Sir Tom himself has previously spoken of the shocking themes in the song: “I love hearing her sing at rugby games. It makes me so proud to be Welsh.”

“I think if they’re looking at the lyric about a man killing a woman, it’s not a political statement. It’s just something that happens in life.” [and] He just loses it. The great thing about the song that everyone picks up on is the chorus. I don’t think they really think about it.”

And now, the legend is said to be “shocked” by the latest outburst and backlash over the song.

However, it has been reported that, as of now, Sir Tom will not be removing the controversial song from his collection.

The last time Delilah performed at the home of Welsh rugby union was at the Cardiff Emirates Stadium in 2022.

According to The Daily Mail, the Welsh star is set to perform the number this summer in his first major Welsh performance in twenty years when he takes to the stage at Cardiff Castle on July 21.
