Turkey and Syria earthquake: the death toll exceeded 15,000, according to officials

Gaziantep, Turkey – More than 15,000 people died after a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit southeastern Turkey and northwestern Syria early Monday, according to officials.

The epicenter of the pre-dawn quake was in the town of Pazarcic in southeastern Turkey’s Kahramanmaras province and was followed by a number of strong aftershocks. Thousands of buildings have been toppled on both sides of the border, and the death toll is expected to rise as rescue workers search for survivors amid huge piles of rubble.
