Broomstick racing tips and tricks

Having trouble winning broom races at Hogwarts Legacy? This guide can help you get through those times.

Riding a broom is one of the most magical experiences you can imagine while reading through the pages of Harry Potter and watching the movie adaptations. Even if, at least as of now, Quidditch has been cut from Hogwarts Legacy, and we can’t help but be angry at Headmaster Nigellus Black for banning it from our fifth year at Hogwarts, flying still feels pretty cool.

Riding a broom over the gorgeous landscapes designed by Portkey Games is amazing but can be tricky, especially during the official races. By following these simple tips and tricks, your flying problems will be just a distant memory.

Broomstick racing: the basics

Hogwarts old broom basics

Flying Class teacher Madam Kogawa will teach you the basics. The Hogwarts Legacy broom race, like other games with flying mechanics, revolves around the two-stick controls. With the left stick, you will control your character and fly to either side, while with the right stick, you can adjust the flight height.

In case of problems with the vertical axis you can go to the gameplay options in order to turn on the flight control reverse function which will result in:

  • Pushing the right stick forward will let you go down
  • Pushing the right stick back will allow you to go up

Broom Race: Improve your control

Hogwarts Legacy Control Tips

Avoiding slipping is crucial in competitions that are time trials. Every little tweak that you overcompensate for may only lead to critical errors that will cost you a lot of time. Keeping calm is mandatory, and you will have to follow a few simple rules:

  • Don’t overuse the boost button as it will change your trajectory very abruptly, and will make you miss the rings during the competitions.
  • Switch the flight speed with the left stick to pull the brakes when needed.
  • Try to move gently with the right stick along the y-axis to avoid rushing into the obstacles.
  • Pop the boost bubbles sparingly during the first attempts to avoid hitting the rings too quickly. It’s better to have a lower speed than risk losing the rings because that will cost you a 3 second penalty.
  • Pay attention to the time trial ghost and try to mimic its flight pattern.

Broom race: preparation for the competition

Hogwarts Legacy balloons

The secret to becoming the fastest broom racer ever is practice. Madam Kogawa’s side quests are the best way to prepare yourself for Iselda’s time trials. Not only will you be taught new spells after completing these tasks, but they will also improve your control. During your missions, you will have to pop many flying balloons that are floating over the neighboring villages of Hogwarts.

This activity will allow you to maintain a straight path, which will be good training for the bubbles you will have to pop during the races and will allow you to get used to moving around the obstacles. Free roaming, especially in the woods, will improve your performance in tight spaces, too.

Albie Weekes, broom salesman at Spintwitches Sporting Needs in Hogsmeade, is the one who sold you your first broomstick and will provide you with several side missions that will give you upgrades that will boost your speed and help you beat the trial challenge every time.

With all of these tips, not even Quirinus Quirrell’s broom in the Quidditch match seen in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone won’t knock you out of your way.
