Hot clothes are essential to survive the cold winter. I’ve tried heated mittens, heated socks, heated coats, and even other heated vests before to stay warm. But none of these options utilize intuitive AI technology like Carhartt’s new smart heated jacket.
At $219, the Carhartt X-1 Smart Heated Jacket (Opens in a new tab) It is definitely a brag. However, it’s packed with proactive features that help manage temperature changes throughout the day, whether it’s for a job, an outdoor workout, or a busy schedule during cold weather. The X-1 takes the manual effort out of adjusting a heated garment to your environment with automatic controls to keep the wearer’s body at a comfortable temperature.
The X-1’s smart features are powered by Clim8’s smart thermoregulation technology. In the companion Clim8 app, not only could I control the jacket’s three heating elements based on my personal preferences, but I could put it on AI autopilot by telling the app my current activity.
The recent New York City cold front allowed me to gauge just how well the X-1 was actually tuned. Even though the wind chill was below freezing, my dog still needed a walk. I pulled the jacket over a thin long-sleeved Lululemon blouse, tucked it in, and tucked it under a sweatshirt and winter coat.
Clim8 combined the jacket’s temperature with my environment and additional layers to make real-time temperature adjustments. Waiting for an apartment building’s service elevator often takes several minutes, so my jacket didn’t get uncomfortably warm before I got outside. When I hit the cold air, I felt my torso heat up quickly. Towards the end of the walk, I may have felt a bit too warm under my layers, but I’d prefer extra heat to frostbite.
Walking my dog takes an average of 30 minutes. Halfway through my fifth run with the X-1, I noticed I didn’t feel the constant heat coming from under my coat. I took my iPhone 14 Pro Max out of my pocket and saw that the jacket was no longer connected – the battery was dead.
Fortunately, without the heating function and smart features, the polyester velvet jacket is still a comfortable layer. But as for what you can expect from battery life, there’s no real estimate, because longevity depends on how much energy the jacket uses to stay hot.
Is the Carhartt X-1 Smart Heating Jacket worth it?
Compared to the popular Omoro heated jacket I tried, Carhartt’s X-1 is definitely more technical and has a brand feel that I (and many other Carhartt fans) love. If you ask me, the jacket’s high-quality construction alone helps justify the price. However, the Omoro jacket costs $169 (Opens in a new tab) At full retail it promises up to 10 hours of battery life. It’s a long-term alternative and costs a good fraction less.
As for AI heating features, I don’t know how many people would actually choose automatic adjustments using the app versus turning the jacket on and off using the physical button on the jacket’s outer right pocket.
If you’re outside, you may want to remove your smartphone as a front to stay warm. But if maintaining a comfortable temperature throughout your activities is important to you, the Carhartt Smart Heating Jacket may be your best solution yet for adapting to cold weather.
