The shooting took place on Wednesday evening. At approximately 5:05 p.m., a shooting was reported at the Cielo Vista Mall, which is located across the street from the Walmart wherekilling In a racist attack in 2019.
“This is the second time this has actually happened,” said Simone Cortez, whose niece works at the mall.
A witness told CBS News that the violence began when two “kids” were “arguing” in the mall’s food court. The police did not provide any information about the suspects or their motives.
“One of the kids looked at the other kid and just said he was going to kill him, and that’s when he pulled out a gun,” Katie Hood told CBS News. “And then we heard gunshots.”
Hood said she ran to a nearby bathroom where she estimated there were “30 or 50” people. Another man told CBS News the crowd was “pushing and pushing” as they ran for cover.
Police, including off-duty officers who work security at the mall, responded within three minutes. An off-duty officer arrested a suspect at the scene. A second suspect was later arrested, although the police did not provide details on how he was arrested.
One of the victims was declared dead at the scene. Three others were taken to hospital and are in critical condition.
“I was scared. I was afraid for my life,” Michelle Lopez, another witness at the scene, said.
