In 1973, a few years after the Beatles had broken up, John Lennon was working on his fourth solo album, Mind Games. But he wasn’t happy. He was struggling with changes and stagnation in his life, and things were spiraling out of control with his wife, Yoko Ono, to whom he had been married for four years. Ultimately, Ono (who turns 90 this week on February 18, 2023) decided to walk away from the marriage.
Ono explained, “I was hated and John was hated because of me… I needed a break. I needed space. Can you imagine every day getting that shake from hated people? You want to get out of that.”
She added that she and Lennon were so close that they “never went to the bathroom alone”. He would say, “I will come with you.” Ono remembered. “And this will be in public places like EMI recording studios.”
Eventually, Lennon teamed up with their assistant, May Pang, a 22-year-old American woman in whom the former Beatle had previously taken an interest.
“May Pang was a very intelligent and attractive woman,” Ono recalled. “And very effective. I thought they’d be fine.”
Lennon Ono and New York left with Bang for Los Angeles to build a new life there. He was with his new girlfriend for 18 months in what he describes as his “lost weekend” – a reference to the movie and book of the same title (the story follows an alcoholic who loses his weekend due to his vices and bad decisions).
Despite the fact that Lennon had been gone for 18 months, Ono admitted: “This affair was something that didn’t hurt me.”
“I was ready to lose him,” she admitted. “But it would have been better if he came back. I didn’t think I’d lose him.”
Once Lennon and Ono got back together, they gave a joint interview to Playboy magazine. Ono said, “John was such a good person. It was society that got too much. We laugh at him now, but we started dating again.”

Ono went on to say that she wanted to “make sure” Lennon was.
She continued, “I am grateful for John’s intelligence…because he was smart enough to know that was the only way we could save our marriage, not because we didn’t love each other but because it was getting too much for me.”
Bang herself opened up about their 18-month affair in 2011. She claims Ono got her and Lennon together when things got too much for their marriage.
“Yoko came to me at 9:30 in the morning,” Pang recalled. “I didn’t even drink my first cup of coffee — and she said, ‘May, I have to talk to you.'” John and I don’t get along. “I knew it because the tension was intense.”
Ono told her, “He’s going to start going out with other people. I know you don’t have a boyfriend and I know you’re not after John, but you need a friend and you’ll be good for him.”
“I said I didn’t think so,” Pang told her, “but she said, ‘You don’t want him to go out with someone who’s going to be bad with him, do you?'” I said: Of course not. She said: You will be complete and I left.
Once Lennon and Ono got back together at the end of 1974, Ono became pregnant. She later gave birth to their son, Sean Lennon, on October 9, 1975.
Lennon then took five years away from music to take care of his son. A month after releasing his album Double Fantasy with Ono in November 1980, he was murdered on December 8th.
