Son’s Review: Inconsistent Performance and Expected Results | Movies | entertainment

Sadly, while Father has used shifting perspectives and clever editing to create a cinematic experience, Son remains firmly rooted in his theatrical origins.

New York attorney Peter Miller (Hugh Jackman) has left his wife Kate (Laura Dern) and teenage son Nicholas (Zane McGrath) to raise a child with his lover, Beth (Vanessa Kirby).

Their divorce appears to have cut deeper into Nicholas who clearly suffers from serious mental health issues.

In desperation, Kate agrees to let the boy move in with his father and his new partner.

Sadly, the relentlessly optimistic Peter has father issues of his own and is emotionally ill-equipped to deal with his son’s chronic depression.

There are some heartbreaking moments but the tone is relentlessly bleak, the performances skimpy and the score predictable.
