Elvis’ Daughter Lisa Marie “Graceland Upstairs: My Father’s Beautiful and Frightening Shrine” | Movies | entertainment

Baz Luhrmann’s biopic Elvis is likely to win some gold gear at tonight’s Academy Awards – especially actor Austin Butler for his portrayal of the King. Of course, few really know what life was like behind closed doors in Graceland where Lisa Marie lived until she was 11 and her father died suddenly on August 16, 1977. Tragically, the star’s child died just as suddenly earlier this year after She soon came out of her grief seclusion after losing her son Benjamin Keough in July 2020. Now both of them are buried in Graceland Gardens with their famous family.

Elvis passed away over 40 years ago, but half a million fans still visit his house every normal year (except for epidemics). They are displayed throughout the downstairs living rooms and downstairs entertainment rooms. They tour the areas and grounds of the museum, and of course the Meditation Garden where the star is buried alongside his parents, Gladys and Vernon, grandmother Minnie Mae and now Lisa Marie and Benjamin

But no one is allowed upstairs except for Lisa Marie (ex), her mother Priscilla, and their very trusted members of staff.

Lisa Marie inherits Graceland after her father’s death along with Vernon and Minnie Mae. After their deaths, as sole heir, she had the final say on how to preserve the memory of Elvis.

Graceland Archivist Angie Marchese oversees all contents of the house, attached museum, and storage and display areas.

“Upstairs at Graceland,” she said, “even when Elvis was here was always a very private part of the house. Even Elvis’ closest friends and family didn’t go upstairs unless they were personally invited. When we opened for tours in 1982, the family asked that we keep it private.” upstairs, and we still honor and maintain that request today.

Angie added: “The bedroom really looks as if he (Elvis) just woke up one day and left. The bed is made and all his personal items are still in place except for his archived clothes.”

The record player in the star’s bedroom still has the last disc he played on, a track by Elvis’ backing singers, J.D. Sumner and The Stamps.

Apparently, there’s even a Styrofoam cup on the shelf, just as it was on August 16, 1977.

Lisa Marie vividly described some of the details of what was saved upstairs as well as her mixed feelings about her childhood and the loss of her father’s Saved Forever in Time.

In addition to her upstairs bedroom, the archives and museum contain countless artifacts from her childhood from clothes and her bed to a Christmas stocking.

The upstairs area of the mansion consisted entirely of Elvis’ massive suite with his bedroom, office, wardrobes, and bathroom where he died.

Linda Thompson, who dated Elvis from 1972 to 1976, recently described upstairs: “Our bedroom was black and red and gold…and no—the windows were never opened.”

Lisa Marie was asleep in her bedroom next door when her father’s body was found and he rushed to her, all the screams alerting her.

She visited the house regularly throughout her life, especially on Thanksgiving and Christmas when large family meals were still celebrated in the dining room.

But she explained why she went upstairs alone: ”It’s very convenient for me.”

Upstairs alone she was surrounded by her father’s favorite things. She added, “The books, the videos, everything is still there. The Godfather, Citizen Kane, Pink Panther, Bruce Lee – all his videos are still there. All his recordings.”

VHS recorders and VCRs were released in the United States only on August 23, 1977, a week after Elvis’ death. Commercial video rentals for movies also began late that year. However, the star may have had access to an advanced machine before it hit the shelves.
