The show has grown in popularity within the anime community due to both its horror and action-packed plotline. Despite the intensity of the Attack on Titan universe, many fans knew that their favorite characters would always be in danger of losing their lives.
Although sad, the anime itself has rewarded its audience with brave and inspiring characters. If you want to remember these characters and how their deaths affected us when we first saw them, here are some of the worst deaths in the world of AoT anime.
10 Carla Geiger
Carla Jaeger was only alive on the show for one episode, but her death was the most impactful of the entire series. Erin’s story would never have begun without her death, which made our beloved protagonist the one he was destined to be.
Carla’s death is at the bottom of the list because the audience barely got to know her as a character. However, to see a mother torn apart in front of her children is nothing but happiness.
9 Marco Budt
Marco Budt was one of the first known characters to die in the Attack on Titan universe. Since he had more time than Carla Jaeger herself, he was ranked ninth on our list.
Marco is mysteriously found dead by his best friend Gene after Cadet Corp is forced into the fray. Although it was later discovered that Reiner, Bertoldt and Annie were the real cause of his death. Marco had overheard them plotting to take over the walls, prompting the trio to feed him to Titan.
8 Petra Rall
Petra Rall was a kind and caring character who won the hearts of many fans during the first season. She was part of Levi’s squad, and because of that, was one of the first characters to grow close to Eren.
Her death was emotional. However, it wasn’t as emotional as the others on the list, which landed her in eighth place. She is killed by a Female Titan in front of Eren, causing him to transform into his Titan form and attack Annie out of pure rage.
7 Ymir
Ymir was a sad character that many fans liked as her story was introduced slowly. She was the only friend of Historia Reis, and on her deathbed, wrote to her friend before feeding her to Porco Galliard.
After she writes the letter to Historia, Queen Paradis is seen grieving the loss. Her death was moved quickly, and we didn’t get to see much of Ymir before her death, which, of course, made her death painful but not quite as impactful as it could have been.
6 Kenny Ackerman
As in the Chainsaw Man anime, many of the characters in Attack on Titan have strange personalities – Kenny Ackerman is one of them. After the character is revealed to be Levi’s uncle, the audience is forced to watch the man die in front of his nephew.
His death affected Levi’s storyline, and because his character was so important to the Reese family, his death is sixth on the list. Levi himself received the closure he needed, even if the last words from Kenny were unexpected and swift.
5 Essie and Forlan
Sitting in the middle of the list is the death of the self-made Levi family: Isabel Magnolia and Furlan Church. Since the OVA is set in the past, audiences already knew of their demise. However, seeing Levi in so much pain after his death was traumatic for viewers.
Isabelle and Furlan were killed by the Titans because Levi wasn’t there to protect them. This was the moment that made Levi transform into what he is now in the anime – a man without regrets.
4 Erwin Smith
Erwin Smith died after leading the majority of the scouting parties to their deaths. In the scene before his death, Levi begins the Commander’s final decision by driving him to put his life on the line to pursue his dreams. He told Irwin to lead the recruits to hell, prompting the fans to watch.
In the end, Levi was forced to choose between saving Erwin and Armin, which had to be a quick decision. Though after seeing Eren and Mikasa crying in despair and hearing Erwin accept his fate, Levi made the decision to revive Armin.
3 Hannes
After Carla’s death, it was Hans who checked in on Eren, Mikasa, and Armin the most. Since the man had known the three since they were children, he had a special bond with the trio.
Hans dies trying to redeem himself after being unable to save Irene’s mother. His death was brutal and unsatisfying as he failed to prove himself again. He was also killed by the same Titan that killed Eren’s mother. Although his death was emotional, the deaths below were even more shocking to the public.
2 Sasha Bruce
Because she’s been with Eren and the 104 apprentices since the beginning, the death of the much-loved character, Sasha Prouse, was unexpected. Sasha was a background figure who slowly found a place in the audience’s hearts.
She dies after the first raid on Marley and is shot by Gabby in front of her best friends, Connie and Jan. She died shortly after on the plane she was stationed on, making her demise swift and shocking to all who watch.
1 Hang Zoe
High on the list was Hange’s death, terrifying and inspiring for the Attack on Titan community. The surveying company’s leader died after sacrificing himself for the rumbling. She died so that the remaining Survey Foundation members could survive and have the slightest chance of eliminating Eren and stopping the growl. She sacrifices herself for the innocent in Marley and the rest of the world burns to ashes after wiping out several of the roaring titans causing noise.
