John Wayne “burst” when he was caught with an oxygen mask on the set of Dean Martin | Movies | entertainment

“Another person would lie down, feeling sorry for himself, for a year,” Martin told a reporter for Time. “But Duke, he just doesn’t know how to get sick. He’s recovering the hard way. He’s two loud-talking men in one. Me, when people see me, Sometimes they say, ‘Oh, there’s Perry Como. ‘ But there’s only one John Wayne, and nobody makes any mistakes with that.”

Hathaway made sure to reshoot scenes in which a lot of Wayne’s guts were on display, while the make-up guy stayed on top of things. This included reshaping the star’s eyes, going on to smear Nivea cream on his double chin and straightening his hair. Plus, Duke’s trainer Ralph Volkie rubbed the star’s sore muscles with pain-relieving Absorbine Jr that made the group smell. However, it all paid off and the director hopes America will see John Wayne as they knew him.

However, during filming, Duke had to rely on an oxygen tank on set, which was especially necessary since the filming location of Durango, Mexico was 6,000 feet above sea level. He once “burst into a rage” after Gene Sisko took a picture of him using it from The Globe.
