Mike Flanagan sees potential for other Stephen King characters

as regular readers of The Dark Tower The book series You’ll Know, Stephen King’s saga is drawn from and referenced from all of his other titles. The first attempt at adapting the books for the big screen only hinted at this with barely visible easter eggs. If Mike Flanagan gets his way, his new swing at bat for The Dark Tower could pull off all corners of the King Universe. In theory at least. Speaking on the Script Apart podcast (H/T empire), Flanagan opened up about his love of the characters in Doctor Sleep he spent time with as creator and how they might be brought to The Dark Tower.

“The thing about King’s universe is that it’s all connected. And the nexus of those connections is The Dark Tower,” Flanagan quipped. “So I have a right to it for the time being, hopefully I can hold onto it long enough to get it done, but that’s another thing that always provides opportunities. In the Dark Tower universe, there are all these other characters from the King universe who play their part in different ways. And that is where in which you make changes to the source material to introduce characters who could have played a very important role in that story the way it was structured… Doctor Sleep was written after The Dark Tower was completed.Abra Stone is set in the Dark Tower universe, as a break [telepathic agent]Really interesting thing.”

He continued, “There’s a character in The Dark Tower named Dandelo, who I believe is True Knot’s cousin, who’s an emotional vampire but feeds on laughter rather than fear. But there’s room in this world for the True Knot themselves, there’s room for Rose The Hat.” There could be room for Danny Torrance. There are all kinds of things that could be amazing, if we can put this property on his feet. There are ways to pull other things out of King’s universe, and I think the Shining universe — Dr. Sleep Universe – you can fit into it quite smoothly. Especially since Dick Halloran, in our movie, is referring to the Dark Tower in his last scene with Dan.”

Flanagan also detailed plans he previously had to expand into Characters Dr. Sleep. Prior to the film’s opening, he had been developing plans for spin-offs focusing on both Dick Halloran and the Overlook origin story. Although the door on these projects is largely closed, he added that “maybe some of these ideas will find a new way back.” As they say, all things serve the ray.

When it was confirmed that Flanagan managed to cut Stephen King’s rights The Dark Tower He came without confirmation of where the adaptation might go. Despite having a package deal at Amazon Prime Video, Flanagan confirmed he could create The Dark Tower Wherever it was separate from its main contract. There’s currently no guarantee it’ll be done at this point, but if he returns to his collaborators at Warner Bros. It might make getting some of these characters in there a little easier.
