A student fatally shot two principals at a Denver high school on Wednesday, officials said, and the victims were taken to area hospitals. Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas said the student fled the scene after the shooting at East High School.

Thomas said one of the victims was in a critical condition and the other was in a serious but stable condition.

Thomas said both of the victims were men. The official said that administrators were searching the student in the morning and “a gun was recovered and several shots were fired.” The principal said the student had not been identified because it happened, but that the authorities knew who he was.

“We have no sense of where he is,” the chief said, adding that investigators were trying to talk to people who might know where he went.

Thomas said that the police did not recover the gun used in the shooting. The authorities were searching his home for evidence.

Mayor Michael Hancock described the student as an African-American man in a hoodie worn by an astronaut. The mayor said the student was armed and dangerous.

“We will find this suspect, and we will hold the suspect accountable for his actions,” Hancock said.

Hancock said paramedics were “immediately” able to tend to the injured because they were already at the school to treat the student’s allergic reaction.

Alex Marrero, superintendent of Denver Public Schools, said students have been released early and the school will not be open for the rest of the week.
