The Supreme Mage returns in his basic form

Doctor Strange is dead. So much so that Marvel Comics made an entire event out of it, making a huge splash with the character’s death and subsequent replacement as Earth’s Supreme Wizard. Now Stephen Strange is back in his comic book series of the same name, and it’s technically the seventh installment of the stories to feature the character. In reality, Dr. Strange #1 (2023) is listed as the character’s 497th issue under the old Marvel numbering. Volume after volume, issue after release, longtime comics readers got one weird story after another as the writers and artist explored every possible angle with the wizard.

Then Jed MacKay and Pasqual Ferry come along and inject an original idea into the character, giving him a breath of new life in this new comic book journey.

this time around, Dr. Strange Featuring Stephen and Clea, the supernatural wizard of Earth and the Dark Dimension, respectively. Rooted in a storyline that straddles the line of political intrigue and espionage, this new storyline will have fans seeing how each of the Outsiders deals with the difficult matter at hand. On the plot front, there’s an almost Hickman-Ian flavor of interdimensional politics, diving head-first into a big social issue head-on in the issue’s opening pages with the resettlement of multiverse refugees.

This may, quite frankly, be one of the most important pieces of the puzzle. Although the title features a flying cloak and its heroes cast spells to rid Bleecker Street of demons on a daily basis, MacKay cranks out a script that humanizes even the most inhuman of Marvel characters.

Most importantly, though, is that the story gave Steven a life to live, a life outside of being an Avenger or saving Earth from interdimensional threats. You see, the Sorcerer Supreme is often portrayed as somewhat self-centered and narcissistic but here, Strange helps as many people as possible. It sheds a whole new light on the character, and it’s something worth the wait.

As Ferry and Hollingsworth work side by side, their styles combine with one that pays homage to the best quirky titles of the past. The highlights and shadows in the color, in particular, are simple and minimal, which helps support Ferry’s light line work very well. Together, this creative team creates a new epic Dr. Strange His debut sets the character on an exciting new path across all dimensions.
