ABC7 Eyewitness News

Mexico City – President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador wrote Saturday that Xavier Lopez, a Mexican children’s comedian best known by his stage name “Chapelo,” has died at the age of 88.

Lopez’s most famous work, the Sunday variety show “En Familia con Chabelo,” ran for an amazing 48 years from 1967 to 2015.

The Mexican president wrote on his Twitter account that his eldest son, Jose Ramon, “woke up early to see him (on TV) over 40 years ago.”

Lopez, who was not related to the president, usually wore children’s clothes until his eighties. He helped found the kind of adult-dressed-baby comics that became a staple for decades on Mexican television.

His longevity—he performed in a raspy baby squeak throughout his career—led to joking speculation that he would live longer than anyone else in show business.

Lopez’s agent, Jessica Nivelli, said he passed away Saturday morning. Funeral plans will be announced at a later date.

An American citizen – born in Chicago to Mexican parents – Lopez returned to Mexico with his family at a young age and trained as a physician. But he found his calling in acting.

The comedian’s family wrote on his fan page that Lopez “died suddenly due to abdominal complications.”

He is survived by several children and his wife.
