HISD Takeover: NAACP Hosts Meeting at Community of Faith Church Following Texas Education Agency’s Takeover of Houston ISD

Houston, Texas (KTRK) – The Texas Education Agency is hosting community meetings to answer questions about the state’s takeover of the Houston Charter School District.

It is by far the largest area captured by the state.

As reported by Eyewitness News, it’s a controversial decision. One that will be the subject of another community discussion on Sunday afternoon.

Two meetings have taken place so far. One at Westbury High School and Chavez High School.

The meeting at Chavez HS turned wild within 10 minutes. The audience was jeering and protesting against the TEA Deputy Commissioner, and a bullhorn was used to make their voices heard.

The meetings also aim to address questions regarding the application process to the Board of Directors who will temporarily replace the Superintendent and Trustees of HISD during this acquisition.

The TEA was planning on taking formal questions at Chavez HS, but they were unable to reach that point as a result of the meeting going off the rails.

“Most of it was protest. I’d like to hear more answers about how the process happened,” one attendee told ABC13.

“There’s not a lot of transparency, so I don’t know that a conversation can be had until the TEA opens up with us,” said one attendee.

Sunday at 3 p.m., the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People is hosting a meeting at Faith Community Church located at 1024 Pinemont Dr.

The third TEA-hosted meeting will be moved to HISD’s Delmar Stadium on Wednesday at 6:30 pm before the final meeting on Thursday at Kashmere High School.

So what will happen when the acquisition takes place?

The Texas Education Agency will replace the current Millard House 2 school board and superintendent with people of its choosing on June 1.

What happens next is up to the new board and supervisor, which TEA has not announced.

TEA is currently taking applications to fill the Board of Directors, which will replace the current School Board.

The agency said it would hire people for those roles who live in the HISD state.

TEA officials said they are looking for parents of HISD students, people with backgrounds in finance and law, and people with previous success in general education.

TEA’s ability to take over a district due to academic performance came from 2015 legislation passed by Rep. Harold Dutton, D-Houston, who is on its side.

“They don’t want to go through a takeover, and then no failing schools. They could do that, but they didn’t,” Dutton said.

It’s overreach, says Jackie Anderson, president of the Houston Teachers Union.

“It was a hostile takeover, a serious threat to democracy,” Anderson said.

But before anything becomes official, there are plenty of questions left for families, educators, and staff. Send ABC13 your questions and concerns, and we’ll do our best to get you answers.
