ISD spring teacher salary: Processing error blamed after staff mistakenly overpaid on retention bonuses, district says

Spring, Texas – A processing error has been randomly mixed spring isdemployee effectiveness incentive payments such that some teachers receive too much; Now the district is asking teachers to make the payment by December.

What happened

employees who received $2,000 – $5,000 salary During the 2022-23 school year, overpayments of either $1,500 or $3,000 were made, Christine Cobb, director of communications for SISD, said in an email March 24. This salary was awarded based on the teachers’ years of experience, according to the SISD website.

Teachers who were overpaid were notified March 20 and are expected to pay the money over the 19 checks through December 24.

Underpaid teachers received the remaining amount owed on March 10.

How did we get here

Cobb said internal auditors detected a “screening error” during processing while evaluating the teacher effectiveness incentive program.

“As a responsible agent for taxpayer funds, we must recover any funds that were improperly distributed, as in this case. We greatly value our employees and are working closely with them to resolve this issue, taking into account their individual financial needs and circumstances,” Cobb said.

the influence

during Board meeting on March 21SISD teacher Kirsten Uecker said she knows of 46 teachers who have been affected by the bug. Uecker said she understands “mistakes happen” but wishes the district was more transparent and gave teachers advance notice before asking for reimbursement.

“By the nature of these awards, this is happening to the best teachers in the area, which is frustrating for them,” Oecker said. “So instead of feeling like these incentives are being rewarded, they are actually feeling punished.”

the details

Cobb said that if an employee has “extenuating circumstances” regarding the December 24 deadline for payment, he can contact Payroll to discuss his concerns. Because of an error in sorting the files, overpaid and underpaid employees, Cobb said, the error would not have a net financial impact on the district.

What then?

Cobb said SISD leadership is working to ensure similar errors don’t happen in the future.

SISD will hold a file private meeting At 7 pm on March 29 to report on the payroll program. Members of the public will be allowed to address the trustees in connection with items on the agenda.
