Lenovo’s Legion gaming smartphone business no longer exists

Lenovo seems to be shutting down its Legion gaming smartphone business. The news reportedly came from a social media post from a Lenovo employee and was later confirmed by the company. It’s unclear if this change is region-specific or if the shutdown applies to Legion’s entire smartphone business. If this applies to the business as a whole, it wouldn’t come as a complete surprise, as gaming smartphones are a highly specialized segment. When it comes to products, the last Legion smartphone was released around a year ago in March, with the Lenovo Legion Y90 making its debut in Asia. We’ve reached out to Lenovo for clarification.

Apparently, rumors about the demise of Lenovo’s gaming smartphone business have been circulating for quite some time, but the news has been confirmed by a testimonial Android AuthorityWho contacted the company and got a statement. The news outlet shared its response from the company, which can be seen below.

Lenovo has discontinued Legion Android gaming mobile phones as part of a broader business shift and consolidation of its gaming portfolio. As a leader in gaming hardware and solutions, Lenovo is committed to advancing the gaming category across form factors, as well as focusing on where it can bring the most value to the global gaming community.

This statement pretty much confirms that the Legion line of smartphones will be discontinued indefinitely, with the company focusing more on other areas of its business. Just to be clear, this only affects Lenovo’s gaming smartphone lineup and the company will continue to produce other products in its portfolio such as Legion laptops and gaming desktops.

With Lenovo out of the picture, the gaming smartphone space is smaller than it already was, with major players now including Asus, Xiaomi, and Nubia. While you can game on any modern smartphone, it’s the little things like built-in shoulder buttons, active cooling, or redundant RGB lighting that make gaming smartphones a little better than standard smartphones. We will update this post once Lenovo gets back to us.
