Carol Baskin, owner of Big Cat Rescue, who features prominently throughout the series, announces she is closing her sanctuary. in mail Big Cat Rescue confirmed on their official blog that “most of the Big Cat Rescue cats” will be relocating to Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge, an accredited sanctuary in Arkansas. It’s been suggested that Baskin and her husband Howard’s closure is primarily due to the declining number of animals in their care, and that most of their focus as a rescue over the past few years has been making sure the Big Cat Public Safety Act is passed by Congress.

This legislation now prohibits possession of tigers, lions, and other big cat species except for qualified entities. It also ends “the unsafe and unethical use of big cats and their cubs in commercial filming, petting, and activities that undermine animal welfare and welfare, encourage exploitation, and stimulate unscientific breeding for purely commercial reasons.” This practice, known as “cub petting” and seen first hand in Tiger King, would cease.
Big Cat Rescue writes in their publication, “We believe that BCPSA ending cub petting and phasing out private ownership will eliminate 90% of the abuse that big cats are subjected to in captivity. We hope that increased public awareness of the plight of big cats will, over time, exclude the market from These remaining activities and finish them this way.”
They add: “When Big Cat Rescue was founded 30 years ago, the 67 acres that Big Cat Rescue now occupies was rural. Today, it is surrounded by development. Turpentine Creek, in contrast, is 450 acres in an area where it is expanding even later as possible.” Since Turpentine Creek already has the established infrastructure to house 80 existing senior cats, once enclosures are built, adding 30 or more cats only adds to the variable costs of ranger care, food, and medical care.This means donors’ money is used more efficiently by integrating the cats into the Turpentine Creek”.

Despite this positive development hidden within the sequel series, Baskin herself did not appear in the series Tiger King 2and even tried to sue Netflix to stop its release.
“My family would never have been involved, ever, if they’d known we’d be so betrayed,” Baskin previously told ComicBook.com. “But I feel like everything happens for good, and even though it was really hard to live through so much of that after… Tiger King Because people were so misinformed, they felt they had an absolute right to set things right because they thought I was this horrible person who needed to be brought to justice and that Joe should be released.”
