CM Punk is on his way back to AEW, according to a new report from Choose a fightSean Ross sapp that fell on Thursday. SABB previously reported on Wednesday that Punk has reached out to AEW expressing his desire to return and is willing to work with The Elite or break up entirely with The Elite. The same report stated that Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks were against the idea a few months ago, but noted that it could have changed as negotiations progressed over their new contracts.
The new report states that the current plan is for Punk to return either on or around the June 21st episode of AEW Dynamite at Wintrust Arena in Chicago. The previously announced idea of Punk’s return was also brought up internally.
As for the Punk/Omega/Bucks relationship, Sapp wrote that there is no communication between the two sides but that Punk was trying to set up a meeting with the four. There was reportedly a planned meeting between Punk and Chris Jericho, who has publicly criticized Punk in the past as a “locker room cancer”. There is no word yet on whether such a meeting took place, and SABB stressed that plans within the company can always change.
Punk first arrived in AEW on August 20, 2021, in the special episode “The First Dance” of AEW Rampage Inside Chicago United Center. He then went on to compete in 23 matches, including the main event Double or nothing 2022 when he defeated Adam “The Executioner” Page for the AEW Championship. Unfortunately, a broken foot resulted in Punk having to stay away from in-ring competition, which led to Jon Moxley becoming the interim AEW World Champion. Punk returned months later, only to lose a unification match with Moxley in just three minutes on the August 24, 2022 episode of dynamite. Then he won the rematch Everyone out The following month, however, he tore his triceps muscle during a match.
There have been tentative plans in place for CM Punk’s return to AEW, Fightful Select has learned.

This, combined with explosive comments he made during a post-show scrum session and a locker room brawl involving Omega, The Bucks, and now former AEW trainer Ace Steel, resulted in Punk being stripped of the AEW title and deleted from all AEW programming. It was initially reported that AEW was trying to buy Punk out of the remaining years of his contract but there was a hold that included a “non-compete” clause.
Meanwhile, Omega and Pax eventually returned from commentary before the end of 2022. But aside from some vague gestures during matches and on Being The Elite, all three (and Khan) refrained from going into detail about what happened behind the scenes afterward. Everyone out.
