An organ donor helped save a person’s life in a very unexpected way in Colorado when a crash crashed and nearly plunged into a canyon — but the weight from the deceased organ donor’s back helped keep the groggy car from a fatal fall.

CBS News Colorado mentioned The snowy night of January 29, 2023 was difficult to drive to for Hubbard and Son’s funeral service, mostly due to other drivers. A company employee was hauling a body in the back of a milkshake from Grand Junction to another organ donation site, but he told the Colorado State Patrol that a driver in a red Durango had speeded him on his way toward the Eisenhower Tunnel.

He said he changed lanes to get out of the erratic driver’s way, lost control in the blizzard around 3 a.m., and crashed into the curb at the edge of the road.

His heart smashed through the barrier, teetering off the side of Interstate 70, a fatal fall, but he stopped, his front wheels pinned above the canyon. While the driver and his family declined to be interviewed on camera, they told CBS News Colorado that the weight of the object in the rear of the vehicle likely kept the vehicle on the road, thus stopping the chair from lunging up the side of I-70. He said it undoubtedly saved his life.

“That’s a lucky mom sitting there,” one law enforcement officer is heard to say as he walks towards the car, hanging as if frozen in time, almost perfectly balanced half-run and half-balanced.

Cheryl Talley, director of communications for the Donor Alliance, couldn’t comment on this specific case, but told CBS News Colorado that all organ donors are giving families the possibility of more time with their loved ones.

“Being an organ donor and registering as an organ donor is the most generous thing anyone can do,” Talley said, “is to give life to someone who has no chance at life without that potential transplant.”

More than 100,000 people in the United States Waiting for an organ transplant. But just over half are expected to have a member within five years.

The Donor Alliance said that 66% of Colorado residents are organ donors.

“We always need more to sign up because we’d like to see 100% of people in Colorado sign up to be an organ donor because the need is so great,” Talley said. “Nearly 1,500 people are awaiting life-saving transplants in Colorado today.”
