A star-studded cast honors the animated original, but breathes new life into the live-action ‘The Little Mermaid’.

Philadelphia – The highly anticipated live-action version of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” is now in theaters.

It took director Rob Marshall and his A-list cast nearly five years to bring the 1989 animated classic to life.

In the new movie, you’ll hear beloved classics, and some new music, thanks to a magical collaboration between the movie’s original composer Alan Menken and powerhouse Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The film expands the original story while paying homage to the timeless tale.

“It’s been a beautiful journey for us in reimagining the movie,” said Halle Bailey, who plays Ariel. “I couldn’t be more grateful.”

Ariel and her crew of best friends under the starry sea. Melissa McCarthy is Ursula.

“It was scary, terrifying, and delicious,” she laughed.

Javier Bardem is Ariel’s father, King Triton.

“Ariel is really fighting for her voice in a different way, maybe originally,” Bardem said. “Now, she really is ruling her own destiny.”

Akwafina is Scuttle, and she gets a new song, one of three new tunes.

Another belongs to Prince Eric, whose character has undergone a deep dive.

“To get to know him, we got to understand them better and we understood why they fell in love with each other,” said Jona Hauer King, who plays Prince Eric. “Their relationship really felt like they were emerging from a friendship and coming together as kindred spirits.”

Jacob Tremblay, who is also the voice of Disney’s “Lucca”, voiced Flounder three years earlier when he was thirteen.

“My voice has changed a lot,” said Tremblay. “I almost couldn’t recognize myself, but it was really cool.”

Daveed Diggs in Hamilton is his sweetheart crab, Sebastian.

“I think the diversity of the cast, in this movie, will give a lot of kids a chance to see themselves in this story,” said Diggs.

“The Little Mermaid” is from Walt Disney Studios, which is owned by the same parent company as this station.
