A woman is conned out of $25,000 in a scam

Friendswood, TX (KTRK) – A man and woman conned an Alvin woman out of $25,000 in a “drop-down bathroom scam,” according to Friendswood Police.

The victim, 71, was shopping at the HEB store in Friendswood around 1pm on April 25 when a man made small talk to her. After their conversation, a woman approached the victim and told her about a bag she had allegedly discovered in the HEB parking lot.

The suspect showed the victim a large amount of money inside the wallet and asked what she should do. The victim suggested the suspect turn the wallet over to customer service at the grocery store. The suspect said she worked at a nearby AT& T store, and persuaded the victim to go there instead.

Both the suspect and the victim headed to the AT& T store to speak with the suspect’s “boss” regarding the wallet and refund. The victim waited for the suspect to return while parked behind the AT& T Store.

Once she returned, she said the wallet contained $97,000 in cash and $75,000 in bond. The three individuals debated the Finders’ Keepers Act, and the victim was persuaded to withdraw $25,000 from her bank in Alvin.

They returned to the AT& T store where the victim was parked, the suspects took $25,000 to the other side of the store, never to return.

The suspects are John Ford, 70, of Jackson, Mississippi, and Tiffany Butler, 39, of Clinton, Mississippi. Both are accused of felony theft from the elderly. Warrants were issued for their arrest. Anyone with information should contact the Friendswood Police Department at 281-996-3300.
