Lenovo Yoga Book 9i vs. MacBook Air (2022): Do You Prefer Windows or macOS?

MacOS vs Windows 11 image

The Yoga Book 9i and MacBook Air (2022) run completely different operating systems. On the Yoga Book 9i, you get Windows 11. While the MacBook Air (2022) runs macOS. Windows is a great operating system for productivity thanks to features like Snap Layouts and apps like PowerToys. At the same time, Apple’s macOS is better suited to those who might be creative.

Windows for productivity, macOS for creativity

Windows is home to a lot of great video editing apps and software, but content creators may prefer the simplicity of iMovie and Apple’s Final Cut Pro. Other than that, Windows plays better with Android phones thanks to Phone Link, where you can see photos, messages, and other content on your PC. Phone Link supports iPhones as well, but it is limited in features. On the MacBook, you’ll get better integration with iPhones and other Apple devices with support for apps like iMessage and FaceTime and the ability to AirDrop files to your system. These things may be the first factor in the purchase decision.

Lenovo Yoga Book 9i vs. MacBook Air (2022): Dual-screen convertible vs. clamshell laptop

Other than the operating system, the most obvious place where the Lenovo Yoga Book 9i and MacBook Air 2022 differ is in the design department. Yoga Book 9i is a dual-screen laptop, and the MacBook Air is a traditional clamshell laptop. There is no doubt that the Yoga Book 9i is a winner here in the design department, even when it comes to ports and connectivity. The design gives you many ways to use and enjoy the device.

For starters in this design department, the Yoga Book 9i takes a few elements from the standard Yoga 9i, with its rounded edges around the chassis. It comes in Tidal Teal and has nicely polished corners that make the device a pleasure to hold in your hands with the screen folded back like a tablet. Unlike the Yoga 9i, this is a smaller device. It is only 11.78 inches wide and 0.63 inches thick. This helps in using the device in its various modes. There’s even a deluxe soundbar in the middle, which has dual 2-watt tweeters inside.

The Yoga Book 9i is better in the design department, thanks to its dual screens and polished edges

But about that. If you want to use the Yoga Book 9i with the screens stacked on top of each other horizontally or side by side vertically, you’ll need to use the included foldable stand and Bluetooth keyboard and mouse separately on your desk. This makes this kind of setup a little tricky. Using the Yoga Book 9i like a standard laptop is less of a hassle. You can use the onscreen touch keyboard, or support a Bluetooth keyboard on the bottom screen while using the virtual trackpad. Again, it’s a bit outdated and may take some getting used to.

On the other side of things, the MacBook Air (2022) is a lackluster device. It comes in either Silver, Starlight, Space Gray, or Midnight colors and is a standard laptop clamshell. You can’t fold the screen and use it like anything other than a laptop. It’s a really sleek and slim device when compared to the best Windows laptops out there. Measuring 12.42 inches wide and 0.60 inches thick, it’s almost as thin as the Yoga Book 9i. Since it’s a clamshell, this makes it more portable, and less worry about carrying a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse around and standing like you would on the Yoga Book 9i.

As far as ports go, the Yoga Book 9i is ahead of the MacBook Air (2022) since it has an additional Thunderbolt 4 port. The MacBook has two Thunderbolt 4 ports, MagSafe 3 charging, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The Yoga Book 9i lacks a headphone jack, but since it has three Thunderbolt 4 ports, you can use one of the ports for a headphone dongle.

Lenovo Yoga Book 9i vs. MacBook Air (2022): The dual-screen OLED displays are even better

There is no doubt about that. The Yoga Book 9i has a much better display than the MacBook Air (2022). In fact, it has two OLED touch screens, while the MacBook Air has a traditional non-touch LED panel. This makes the Yoga Book 9i a better laptop for multimedia experiences, and a better MacBook for general productivity.

The Yoga Book 9i has two 13.3-inch 16:10-resolution OLED screens with a resolution of 2800 x 1800, and has slim bezels. The screen supports pen input which means you can ink on the screen and take notes during meetings. With OLED panels, you’ll also get more accurate images because OLED panels cover a greater portion of the color spectrum and produce higher contrast ratios. This makes it an excellent device for watching movies and live broadcasts.

With an OLED screen, Yoga Book 9i is better for multimedia experiences

At the same time, the MacBook Air has a lower-resolution LED display. It’s a 13.6-inch LED display, with a resolution of 2560 x 1664. Colors won’t look as vibrant as they do on the Yoga Book 9i, and you won’t get touch support. There’s also a slightly annoying notch at the top of the screen, which takes away from your available screen space, hence the odd screen resolution.

With the webcams at the top of the screen, the Yoga Book 9i has a 5MP webcam. Meanwhile, the MacBook Air has a 1080p webcam. The 5MP webcam allows for more detail in your calls than Apple’s 1080p webcam.

Apple Macbook Air M2

While the Lenovo Yoga Book 9i has an excellent design and screen, the MacBook Air is ahead when it comes to processing and computing power. Apple’s MacBook Air is powered by a custom Apple M2 ARM-based chip, and you can configure it with an eight-core CPU and either an eight-core GPU or a ten-core GPU. RAM reaches 24 GB. The Yoga Book 9i, meanwhile, has a 13th-generation Intel Core i7-1355U CPU, and you can configure it with up to 16GB of RAM. This is a hybrid CPU with two performance cores and an efficiency core, and it runs at 15W with 2 performance cores and 8 efficiency cores.

The MacBook Air (2022) is ahead when it comes to processing and computing power

Whichever way you look at it, Apple’s custom silicon is much more powerful than Intel’s 13th generation processors because Apple’s custom chip has better graphics performance as well. It’s better suited for video editing, though it does have some limitations, as we found in our MacBook Air (2022) review. For general productivity, these laptops are almost a square measure. If you’re wondering how it stacks up against power, see the graphic below where we compare the chip you’ll find in the Yoga 7i to the MacBook Air’s M2 CPU.

In GPU-intensive tests like 3D:Mark, the MacBook Air outperforms the Yoga Book 9 by nearly twice as much. However, the CPU tests leave the MacBook and Yoga trading blows. We still argue that the MacBook is better, especially because of the enhanced graphics performance.

The MacBook Air (2022) is even better

Lenovo’s Yoga Book 9i carries a pretty steep price tag, so for most people it’s not worth buying. The MacBook Pro is a more basic laptop, with a decent screen, plus plenty of power under the hood for video editing. It also integrates with iPhones and other devices, so it’s great for those in the Apple ecosystem.
