Houston, Texas — Tofu eggrolls and tofu tamales are some of the products from Banyan Foods, the first tofu company in Texas.
“We grew up in a state known primarily for meat production and barbecue,” said Gary Chew, co-owner.
The company was founded in 1978, shortly after the Chiu family immigrated from Taiwan to Houston.
As the company has grown, so has their relationship with their employees.
“We’re 30 percent Latino-owned,” Chiu said, “I like to tell people that if the employees stick around long enough, we give them ownership stakes in the company.”
