The 2022 Motorola Edge+ flagship ticks all the boxes with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 processor, a 144Hz pOLED display, and a large 4,800mAh battery. He was disappointed by the camera performance, which lags behind other flagships, and the original $1,000 price tag was too high.

Motorola Edge+ (2023) could be the phone to get the company back up against the best Android phones once again. It’s powered by the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, has a fast 165Hz OLED display, and long battery life. Motorola has also priced it competitively this year, undercutting several other flagships, including 2022’s Edge+. But is the 2023 Motorola Edge+ engine an improvement enough for existing owners to consider upgrading?

The 2023 Motorola Edge+ recently went on sale at retailers like Amazon, Best Buy, and Motorola for $800. The US market only gets one variant, with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. What’s interesting about this release is that Motorola does not sell this phone through the three largest networks in the US. Some MVNOs will carry the device, including Boost and Spectrum Wireless.
Edge+ was released last year in March 2022. At launch, it sold for $900 for a brief period before rising to $1,000. Oddly enough, the version sold by Verizon with mmWave support was $850 at launch. Normally, if Verizon has a proprietary mmWave version of any phone, it’s more expensive than an alternative that doesn’t have the faster 5G bands. It was also available from Amazon, Best Buy, Motorola, and other retailers. Since this is the latest generation model, you can find some deep discounts. At the time of this writing, we can find the phone for as low as $500 in an unlocked configuration with 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.

Motorola Edge+ 2023 vs Edge+ 2022: Design and Display
The new Motorola Edge+ is a huge shift in design language from the previous device. It’s still clearly a Motorola device, but now it feels like a flagship phone. Both devices are large smartphones, although the new one is a few millimeters smaller in all directions. It’s still close to the size of the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, which makes either Edge+ a handful by most benchmarks.
The biggest design changes are to the screen (which we’ll get to in a minute), the materials used, and the camera bump. For starters, the 2022 Edge+’s plastic frame is gone. Motorola has replaced it with aluminum on the latest model. Combined with the 4D curves of the front and rear windshields, this makes the device feel more premium over the flat panels that preceded it. It may also contribute to the increased IP rating for dust and water resistance, which is IP68 on the newer device compared to only IP52 in the 2022 release. The Edge+ 2023 is the device to get if you want your phone to survive an unexpected downpour.
So far, all of Motorola’s 2023 smartphones have a square camera bump, and the Edge+ is no exception. This is a more modern design than the line of pill-shaped cameras on the previous device, but it means the latest Edge+ won’t lie flat on a table. I recommend choosing a great flat back case with Gorilla Victus Glass protection on both sides.
Both devices have a 6.7-inch pOLED panel with a 2400 x 1080 resolution, but this year’s Edge+ has a 165Hz refresh rate, which is a modest upgrade over its predecessor’s 144Hz. Our reviewer mentioned that if it’s set to auto refresh rate, it won’t go above 120Hz, so you might not notice the refresh rate increase in normal use. Both models also have dedicated stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos certification.
The older Edge+ had the fingerprint sensor on the power button on the right side of the device, while the current one gets upgraded to a fingerprint sensor under the screen. This is a matter of preference, as they both have different virtues. Under-display fingerprint sensors are easy to reach but are often slower or less accurate. Side-mounted sensors are usually faster to use but difficult to reach if they are high up on the device like this.

The latest Edge+ is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip, while the previous device uses the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip. Both have 8GB of system memory and 512GB of storage in the US version. Both of these chipsets are capable and close to flagships. Our testing found impressive improvements in performance and efficiency between two generations of Snapdragon 8 chipsets, and as a result, the latest Edge+ is the best if you need the best performance out of your smartphone.
The newer device also has newer connectivity options with Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.3. The older device has Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.2, but none of these wireless standards can be considered slow. Both devices also run Moto’s custom MY UX Android user interface, which is clean and slick to use, and both devices run Android 13. Both will also get three OS updates with four years of security updates, though the 2022 model may Already received one operating system. Update for Android 13. The latest Edge+ has a longer operating life for anyone choosing between the two today.
Now we turn to battery life. The previous Edge+ came with a 4,800mAh battery, but Motorola has increased that to 5,100mAh in the latest iteration. This means that both will give you all-day battery life, even at their respective screens’ highest refresh rates. The newer device will charge much faster, at 68W versus 30W, and Motorola includes a 68W charger, which is refreshing to see these days with most manufacturers choosing not to include a charger in the box, apparently for environmental reasons.

Both smartphones in this comparison have three cameras on the back. The Edge+ 2023 has a 50MP f/1.8 primary sensor, a 50MP f/2.2 ultra-wide camera with a 114-degree field of view, and a 12MP f/1.6 telephoto lens with 2x optical zoom. This is a more compelling trio on paper than the previous device, which has a 50MP f/1.8 main sensor, a 50MP f/2.2 sensor, and a 2MP f/2.4 depth sensor. Both devices also have a 60MP f/2.2 selfie camera that performs similarly.
The actual performance of the rear cameras is better on the newer device. The 2022 Edge+ was generally good but had some performance issues that came across in our review. Images with close subjects got some halo or halo effect around the subject, which is likely to be an issue with the post-processing pipeline. Overall, images were what’s expected of a flagship device, with color reproduction that’s more accurate than the oversaturation favored by Samsung and others.

When we reviewed the 2023 Edge+, we found that the camera’s photo quality was on par with other flagships in its price range, even delivering capable performance in low-light situations. The only real problem is that once you get past the 2x optical zoom range, images quickly get muddy. Only digital zoom can do so much, even on Samsung Space Zoom.

There isn’t much to choose between the two Edge+ models, at least for camera quality. The newer device will likely create better photos in a wider range of lighting conditions, so if you regularly take photos in less-than-ideal lighting conditions, this is the one to take.
Motorola Edge+ 2023 vs Edge+ 2022: Should you upgrade?
Motorola Edge+ (2023) fixes almost all of the previous device’s shortcomings, with powerful internals and a more refined design. It deserves to join the top Android phones, which are capable of watching and creating media. The curved screen brings Motorola’s design language to modern standards, and My UX software is unobtrusive and showcases the best that Android has to offer.
Motorola prices this move at $800, which is much more reasonable than the previous $1,000 phone. Camera quality has also improved, which is one of the first things anyone should look at when deciding on a flagship-level device.
