There is no doubt that Apple is preparing for the big WWDC 2023 event, which kicks off next Monday (June 5) and continues all week. if it was New report From Bloomberg reporter Mark Gorman Meticulously, part of this setup includes testing some new Mac computers and at least one new chip from Apple’s silicon: the M2 Ultra chip.
Although not confirmed by Apple itself, this report is from a very reliable and credible source because Apple’s annual WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference) events are usually where the company unveils new versions of its operating systems and mainframe computers.
At WWDC 2022 last year, for example, we not only introduced the new versions of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS but also the new MacBook Air 2022. If the Gurman report holds true, next week’s WWDC 2023 will be even more exciting, as in addition to OS updates, we’ll likely meet at least two new Macs and at least one new chip.
Apple is said to be testing the M2 Ultra in new Macs
According to Gurman, Apple is testing two different Macs running two different chips. One of them is said to be running tests with the M2 Max chip, which has 8 high-performance cores, 4 efficiency cores, and 30 graphics cores, in addition to 96 GB of RAM.
These are basically the specs of the 2023 MacBook Pro equipped with the penultimate M2 Max chip, but what’s interesting is that you can’t get a Pro with that chip. And 96GB of RAM—The Apple Store limits you to 64GB unless you upgrade to the 38-core M2 Max option.
The other more interesting Mac reportedly being tested right now is packing the M2 Ultra chip. That’s entirely according to Gurman, because while it makes sense for Apple to announce such a chip to follow the M1 Ultra launched in 2022 with the Mac Studio (pictured above), it hasn’t yet said any plans for the M2 Ultra.
However, it makes perfect sense for Apple to unveil its new M2 Ultra chip, and we’ve heard plenty of reports this year that a new Mac Studio could be launched at WWDC 2023. A new Mac Pro is also reportedly on its way to replace the aging Pros Apple still sells which Intel supports, but it’s unclear if this is the M2 Ultra chip test that’s said to be benchmarking at this time.
Gurman suggests that while Apple is still working on the Mac Pro, the identifying information he has received about these experimental Macs indicates that they are likely new versions of other Mac desktop computers, such as the Mac Studio, rather than a new Mac Pro.
The truth will come out at WWDC 2023
We’ve heard plenty of reports of new Macs debuting at WWDC 2023, and Gurman’s reported test machines packing the M2 Max and M2 Ultra chips will perfectly fit what we’ve heard so far.
While these reports are likely to be inaccurate, it makes a lot of sense for Apple to unveil its new Mac Studios at WWDC 2023 packing M2 Max and M2 Ultra chips. We were first introduced to the M1 Ultra (which is, to put it very simply, an ultra-strong chip of Apple silicon that’s essentially two M1 Max chips glued together) in Mac Studio last year, which Apple pitched as a Mac to tie-in partition between the Mac Pro and Mac mini.
Plus, Apple last unveiled the Mac Studio and the M1 Max chip last year, just weeks before WWDC 2022. So while the timing won’t quite match up with the unveiling of its successor at WWDC 2023 next week, it lines up pretty neatly. It’s hard not to see the Gorman report as a preview of what’s to come.
Of course, in addition to the new Mac desktops and Apple’s new silicon, we also expect to see at least one new MacBook. It’s probably the 15-inch MacBook Air we’ve been hearing reports about for ages, but the only way to be sure is to watch WWDC 2023 with us.
