Chapter 20: The Kingless Castle is one of the few maps in Fire Emblem: Engagement Overshadowed. This is a unique and disturbing mechanic, which adds additional difficulty by forcing the player to carefully place their units, lest they be ambushed by the Darkness. Here’s how to move forward and win this battle.

Notable enemies

1. Grace and Celica

The main boss of this map, Griss has two damaged resurrection stones, as well as a map-exclusive gimmick: at the start of a level, he will start teleporting around the map, hiding in the darkness. Players can force him to retreat by eliminating one of his damaged stones, which is an easy task thanks to his low speed and mediocre defense. When one of his stones is lost, he will teleport to his protection tile at the top of the map and wait for the cheerleaders to approach.

2. Elusian Pvt

While this unit may look like an ordinary enemy, it has the potential to be the deadliest. They have an Entrap staff, which allows them to teleport one of the player’s adjacent units to themselves, placing them right in the middle of enemy forces. This threat must be dealt with carefully, otherwise, it could be fatal.

Shadows on this map can be very difficult to deal with. As players will quickly notice, enemies hiding in the dark can’t be seen, although they can still attack. Moreover, allies cannot march into areas that have not yet been lit. This will force the Alear to randomize their units so they can scout other areas.

As a result, high mobility in this map is valued much less than in most others, providing a great opportunity to take advantage of generals like the mighty Louis or Jade.

Players can also light torches that are scattered around the map to move forward in the dark. This will create permanent areas of view, allowing them to position their units more freely. Also available for purchase is the Illume Staff, which reveals 7 spaces around the user, shrinking by one each turn. While it would require Alear to place normally weak units in precarious locations to get the most out of them, the low staff score means anyone with a staff competency can take advantage of it. Therefore, a Griffin Knight, Royal Knight, or whatever unit Micaiah uses can equip it.

As mentioned above, Griss will start teleporting as soon as the battle begins. Fortunately, its first position is always the same. It initially appears in the lower right corner of the map, outside the range of the torch. With clever use of Byleth’s Goddess Dance and Seadall’s Dance, he can be rushed with units before he has a chance to teleport away. Getting rid of a damaged revive stone will allow fans to approach the rest of the map without worrying about where to attack next.

After defeating Griss’ attack, Alear must slowly work their way north, making sure to position weak units far enough away that they are not attacked from the shadows. Upon entering the second row, the robbers will spawn and make a beeline for the boxes on either side of Griss. Ensuring that they don’t escape should be a priority, because the items in those chests are very valuable.

As players advance, they must be careful not to let anyone into range of the Entrap crew until they are ready. To deal with this, players can either You have a high-powered unit that uses Lyn’s Astra Storm to eliminate the soldier using it, Or allow a defensive unit, ideally using the mighty Ike, to teleport. The latter strategy is riskier, so they must be sure to quickly boost their chosen mate. Finally, Entrap doesn’t have a 100% hit rate, so it’s also possible to try stacking Avoid on a unit, through bracing and avoiding terrain boosts, and making it dodge. This will bring the soldier closer, allowing them to dash down before they can cause more trouble.

The final barrier between Alear and Griss will be the trio of Wolf Knights hidden south of it. Players likely won’t be able to see them before they charge out of the dark, so you have to be very careful how you proceed. One of them also wields a Peshkatz, which is a very powerful knife, which can malfunction after defeating its player.

Grace is a dangerous enemy thanks to Emblem Celica. He is able to attack twice per turn with Echo, allowing additional chain attacks from his allies. Compared to Marni and Mauvier, Griss is a glass cannon. Once within range, a Resistance heavy unit can take his initial strike, then allies can pile on him to complete the map.
