If you asked me about six weeks ago what the best MacBook, or indeed the best laptop, money can buy, I would have said MacBook Air M2 without skipping a moment. I adore the machine, even if it comes at a premium price; It combines elegant design with great performance, ample battery life, and a great display.
But with WWDC 2023 coming up on June 5th, I’d shut down if I’d been asked the same question. Well, in fact, I suggest you don’t buy any Macs until the Apple event is over.
While it’s usually an event where Apple promotes its latest software, releases, and innovations, this year’s Worldwide Developers Conference is set to feature a range of devices, from updated Macs to the 15-inch MacBook Air and Apple’s long-awaited VR/AR headset. .
Since a lot of these reports come from reliable sources, I might put down quite a bit of cash to see the 15-inch MacBook Air and the likes of an updated Mac Studio unveiled on June 5th.
Don’t buy a Mac today!
Now is the worst time to buy a new Mac, especially a MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. You’re better off waiting to see what Apple reveals at WWDC.
Buying a Mac Studio could be a mistake, as it is very likely that Apple will supply it with an M2 Max and/or M2 Ultra chip, bringing improvements over the Apple M2 chip to supercharged versions of the higher silicon. Going by Apple’s previous moves, the updated Mac Studio will likely be the same price as its predecessor; This model can then be discontinued or chipped in price, which means you are definitely better off delaying your purchase.
15-inch Air could be the replacement for the MacBook Pro
As for the 15-inch MacBook Air, you can dismiss it by saying you don’t want an Air with a larger screen. But that would be premature, as a larger chassis area means more room for passive cooling, so the M2 chip could provide this larger air-to-air chip with higher performance for longer periods of time than the 13-inch model.
Assuming the 15-inch Air offers stronger performance than the smaller model, this could result in a device that outperforms the 14-inch MacBook Pro, and perhaps even outperforms the 13-inch MacBook Pro; The latter is rather long and can be sent to the Cupertino walled garden in the sky.
I’m relatively confident that the larger MacBook Air with the M2 chip can provide a compelling middle ground between the expensive MacBook Pro and more affordable Airs, yet still deliver performance that can keep up with all but the most demanding professional workloads.
There’s no word on the 2023 iMac revealed at WWDC, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was quietly updated. So again, I suggest you avoid buying the current 24-inch iMac at least for the time being.
Get ready for discounts on existing Macs
You might argue that you don’t need the latest Macs, which is totally valid. But with the new Macs comes the opportunity for existing models to be slashed by Apple itself or sliced by the likes of Amazon and Best Buy, who are looking to clear their shelves of old Macs before stocking up on the new ones.
In short, if you’re suddenly dying to buy a macOS device, I suggest you hold your fire. Yes, there is nothing quite like opening up a new laptop, especially one that was originally introduced as the MacBook. But waiting a little longer should help you get the right Mac for your needs and avoid any buyer’s remorse.
