Maryland slum squatters: ABC13 has been contacted by residents to identify a couple who settled into the house in April, and moved into a vacant home

Maryland, Texas (KTRK) – A group of squatters who lived in one house in the Meyerland neighborhood of Houston featured in a recent investigation on ABC13 moved into another house a few blocks away, to the frustration of neighbors in the area.

“I saw some young men pulling up the road and opening the gate, and it looked like they belonged there,” said Alice Rubin, who lives across the street from 10206 Palmforth, a house that had been unoccupied just two weeks earlier.

“They took out the ‘for sale’ sign,” she said, “and I thought, ‘Oh, maybe they’ll move in.'”

Robin has since learned that they are not neighbors who have moved in. They are con artists, people who break into homes and then live in them for free, often for months.

In April, ABC13 was first notified of a home at 5047 Glenmeadow, also in Meyerland. Rhianna Sherman and her family were about to buy the house at the time. When they found the squatters, they pulled out the contract.

Unfortunately for Montoya, who lived next door, he had no other choice.

“It was a constant movement in and out. It was just a constant movement, at night especially, at 12 in the morning, two in the morning, and a constant movement,” Montoya recalled. “It was awful. So much noise, people have never seen it coming in and out.”

The owners of the Glen Meadow home began the eviction process, but it took months. The Fifth Precinct Deputy Police Office confirmed that they received an eviction notice for that home, but neighbors say the squatters left before the eviction could take place.

However, they did not move far. Several Mayerland neighbors contacted ABC13, saying the same squatters had moved into the Palmforth house, which had been vacant for years.

ABC13 knocked on the door today, and a man answered.

“Are you Nathaniel? Are you Mr. Henderson? Are you squat? Are you supposed to live here?” The unknown man closed the door.

In court eviction records, the owner identified the squatters as Nathaniel Henderson and Velma (Bradley) Henderson.

According to court records, Nathaniel Henderson, who listed the Glenmeadow home in a different court document earlier this year, has an active shoplifting charge.

“I’m surprised they stay in the area,” Montoya said. “For me, that means they don’t get in trouble, they don’t get in trouble, you can do it over and over again.”

Henderson presented the so-called “lease” to the police when they showed up in Balmforth last week. This lease lists the owner at 7400 Harwin, Suite 102. ABC13 visited the business building Thursday and found the office suite didn’t appear to be there.

The Fifth Precinct Police Office confirms that they are looking into the matter.

While reporting on the Palmforth home scene, the scammers inside called the Houston Police Department on the ABC13 crew outside.

The officer who arrived decided that the people inside didn’t want our crews to report it.

No report has been filed, but a trial date for the people living inside the home has been set for late June.
