The new season of the anthology series will take place in the Y2K era

Los Angeles — Cruel Summer returns to Freeform with a new season, new cast and a new mystery to solve. But there will be similarities to the first season, which was a huge hit with fans.
This story follows the relationship between Megan, Isabella and Luke when a shocking event changes everything. This season will take place over three timelines in the 2000s era. On The Red Carpet spoke to the three stars, Sadie Stanley, who plays Megan, Griffin Gluck, who portrays Luke, and Lexi Underwood, who plays Isabella.
“This season is very much like the first,” said Sadie Stanley. “We have a lot of the same pieces and the same formula. We have three schedules that worked really well in the first season.”
“Just as disorganized as a timeline is when you watch it, it is completely disorganized while we’re filming it. We bounce back and forth like several times a day,” Gluck said. “It’s really fast paced. It’s hard work. But I think the way we approached the cast was just dependent on each other, relying on each other.”
“I think as an actor, you always want to attach yourself to a project that will stretch you, and that will make you a better artist on the other side of it,” said Lexie Underwood. “I’m really grateful we were able to get a chance to handle it and I think we hope we can do it justice, just like the cast in season one.”
Stanley said she understands how surprised “Cruel Summer” season 1 audiences might be with a new cast, but says she thinks it’s worth the wait.
“I think everyone made the right decision to make it an anthology. I hope the fans are excited and there are all the twists and turns they love.”
Season 2 of “Cruel Summer” premieres June 5 on Freeform. New episodes air Mondays on Freeform, and catch-up previous episodes on Hulu.
