Harris County, Texas (KTRK) – More than a dozen families have been displaced after their apartment building in northwestern Harris County caught fire during powerful storms Thursday night.

The video above is from the live broadcast channel ABC13.

Firefighters from Klein and Ponderosa responded just after 6 p.m. to the London Park Apartments on the 145000 block in Pamell North Houston near Walters Road.

Video shared with ABC13 showed intense flames engulfing several apartments. Resident Emma Johnson said the fire started at the height of the storm.

How it started was very close to Dra-kkar Wesley.

“The transformer exploded and fell into the corner of my yard,” he said.

Then the father grabbed his three children and left.

Klein’s volunteer fire department deputy chief, Steve Kramer, said their response was a little slower than usual due to heavy traffic caused by the power outage at the intersections. Seventy-two firefighters were on the scene, fighting the flames from the ground and up by means of a tower ladder truck.

Kramer said eight units were destroyed. Another eight sustained water and smoke damage, all escaping unharmed.

While residents believe weather is the cause, the Harris County Fire Marshal’s office will make that determination after an investigation.
