Mindflayer powers will show up early on in most people’s playthroughs. The most common way to trigger the Illithid Skill Tree is to loot the body of Edowin, a True Soul located just West of the Emerald Grove near the Owlbear Cave.

During this interaction, allow your character to collect and consume the Mindflayer Parasite found on the body. Shortly afterward, the Guardian will appear to explain your new powers. This cut scene causes the Illithid Skill Tree icon to appear in the top right corner of the screen. It’s next to the mini-map.
