PlayStation is said to be adding Discord voice chat to its console in the coming months. Discord is one of the largest social platforms out there, even outside of gaming. It’s a great way to bring people together and organize communities into a comfortable and compact space. The service was used for those interested in the stock market, movies, sports, and much more. Some developers have even organized official servers to keep in touch with fans and organize events with their community members. The biggest reason to use Discord is for voice chat, which allows people to talk to anyone anywhere. While voice chat is far from a new concept, Discord’s approach has helped fill in the gaps in the gaming scene. As crossplay games are becoming more and more prominent, players have used Discord as a way to “group chat” across platforms. The only problem is that they have to use their phone or be near a computer to do this.
Now, it looks like platform owners are trying to integrate Discord into their ecosystem. It was recently confirmed that Xbox is adding Discord voice chat, and it’s even available for select users right now. PlayStation also announced a partnership with Discord in 2021 that began by letting users show PlayStation games they’re playing to other Discord users. According to Tom Henderson of eXputer, full Discord integration is expected to be added to PlayStation 5 in update 7.00, with 6.00 in mid-September. Progress is said to be “going well” and although no hard date has been set, it is expected to be released by the end of 2022.
With that said, it looks like cross-play will be a great experience by the end of this year. With a new Call of Duty on the way and more big multiplayer titles definitely on the way in 2023, it’s likely that Discord will see a significant increase in active users thanks to this console integration. Only time will tell how successful it really is, but at least it’s coming.
