Joseph Robert Theisman was born on September 9, 1949 in New Brunswick, New Jersey. He attended South River High School where he played several sports and wrote in baseball, basketball and football. After graduation, Theismann accepted a scholarship to attend the University of Notre Dame to play football for Fighting Irish.

After negotiations with the Dolphins failed, Theismann decided to sign the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League on a contract worth $50,000 annually. After accumulating 6,093 yards with 40 touchdowns (to 47 interceptions) over three seasons, the NFL came on again.
In 1974, the Washington Redskins acquired Theismann rights from the Miami Dolphins for the team’s first-round option in 1976.
