Spoilers below for those who haven’t yet watched the Season 5 premiere Connersbe warned!
as such Conners She returned to ABC for its fifth season, and re-presented the most recent to viewers newly married couple: Darlene, Ben, Jackie, and Neville, and the latter duo clearly has no shortage of lustful energy. The premiere also set the new living mode going forward, with Becky and Beverly Rose moving in with most of Darlene’s crew. It was a relatively disaster-free installment, except for Mark’s second part Experiment with mind-altering substancesDoes this mean that these characters should get used to such brighter pastures?
When CinemaBlend’s Sarah Elmahmoud spoke with Sarah Gilbert and Lacey Goranson before “Double Honeymoon and Seeing Double,” she asked what fans can expect from Darlene and Becky early in Season 5, and it actually looks like everything is on the rise and higher for both Conner’s daughters . This only serves to plant doubt in my mind, but let’s keep things optimistic for now.
Sarah Gilbert on Darlene, Bean’s new home and early marriage
When asked how Darlene and Ben’s new home compares to the famous TV landmark the Conner family home, Sarah Gilbert said things would be relatively modest, and that fans shouldn’t expect anyone to start avoiding the main house. In her words:
Dan shared some spontaneous feelings whenever Harris expressed a desire to stay around the main house rather than move into the new house with the rest of her family, as he thought it was finally Grant Louise her wish For peace, quiet and privacy when you are at home. So for his sake, I hope when Gilbert says Darlene & Co. will spend “a lot” of time there, that points to the points where Katie Sagal’s character is on the road playing gigs. (Perhaps ironically, it’s better to have a crowded house.)
Given that Ben and Darlene’s relationship has gone from very stormy to less stormy over the past few years, we asked Sarah Gilbert how much positive thinking and/or impulsive they were in the first chapter of their lives as a married couple. And while things obviously won’t be perfect, she doesn’t hint at anything volcanic on the horizon, saying:
But the phrase “calm before the storm” is there for a reason, and in a show like ConnersA streak of non-destructive feelings is a good indication that the other shoe is going to go down really hard at some point. This doesn’t mean viewers should expect Darlene and Ben’s marriage to swing or anything else, but the creative team knows how to do it. Make things tragic without necessarily crushing the characters themselves.
ConnersShowrunner Bruce Helford previously confirmed Season 5 You will not focus on home renovations Or anything like that before the characters settle into their homes. So one can assume that there is no need to worry about Darlene falling through any other ceilings, resulting in more spontaneous life changes for her and Ben, nor any big fights over what the house should look like. Only ordinary married people fight.
Lacey Goranson on Becky’s Journey at the start of Season 5
Becky was the only adult character on the show who didn’t go through some sort of personal marital issue in season 4, if we’re counting that the DJ’s marriage was influenced by AWOL Geena again. She returns in the finale of the third season. That’s not to say Lecy Goranson’s character didn’t have her own struggles to deal with, but more than ever, Becky’s life is in bloom right now. When asked about the character’s attitude during the early episodes of Season 5, this is what the actress had to say:
I think we can all expect some ups and downs when it comes to Darlene and Becky living under a different roof together, especially if Darlene is the one who can set the rules. (It sucks, Ben.) After watching the newlyweds get nervous over hearing Jackie and Neville having sex in the same booth, I can’t wait to see how they react when Becky brings someone home for a naughty time.
One of Becky’s continuing character traits is her past with alcohol abuse, and her current path of sobriety. As often happens in these cases, she stumbles along the way, but Lecy Goranson doesn’t seem to believe Becky will take off soon, even with such a major life change as moving in, and instead makes it seem like she’s using dark times to inspire a brighter future.
Of course, when I spoke to showrunner Bruce Helford last season around the time the finale aired, he hinted that Becky’s drifting nature lead to complications. Although, I suppose, complications do not necessarily mean outright disasters. It’s hard to shake off ominous feelings about what will soon happen to the Conner family, but I’m happy to be engulfed in their temporary joy while it lasts.
