AEW’s Big VanZant talks about why she turned down WWE

Paige VanZant officially signed with AEW earlier this month, bringing the former UFC fighter and Dancing With The Stars competitor to the pro wrestling promotion roster. VanZant revealed in her throw this week with Renee Paquette and Miesha Tate that she nearly finished in WWE a year before she started appearing in AEW, but disagreed with what the company had in mind for her. VanZant has not wrestled a match yet, although she has started training and has been on programs alongside Dan Lambert since last September.

“I knew my career would eventually take me to pro wrestling. I wasn’t sure where it would be, if it was going to be WWE or AEW. I was a fan of both, and I made it to WWE headquarters about a year ago,” Vanzant said (h/t fight). “They had a different plan for what they wanted for me. With AEW, I’m so excited that they were so happy to partner with me and let me continue to fight MMA and practice boxing. A career, build me up as a wrestler, and let me be myself.”

VanZant initially sparked competition with Brandi Rhodes, but the former chief branding officer left the company last month along with her husband, Cody Rhodes. She then participated in a TNT Championship match between Sami Guevara and Scorpio Sky, where she attacked Ty Conte (Guevara’s girlfriend) ringside and signed her contract over both while they were unconscious.

12 Gauge talked about joining WWE in 2017 Sports Illustrated At the time, “It’s definitely something I see myself competing in, and I think it’s a great organization and I’d like to transfer to WWE. Right now, I’m in the UFC and I’m still strong and confident in what I’m doing now but in the end, yeah I’d like to transfer.”
