Chris Rock refuses to press charges against Will Smith over Oscar slap

After an argument between Will Smith and Chris Rock during the 94th Academy Awards Sunday night, it appears the latter won’t press charges. Shortly after the Oscars concluded, the Los Angeles Police Department released a statement indicating that Rock would not file a police report, and therefore pursue the charges.

“LAPD investigative entities are aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards program. The incident involved the individual slapping another. The individual involved has refused to file a police report,” the statement read. “If the interested party desires a police report at a later time, the Los Angeles Police Department will be available to complete the investigation report.”

Rock appeared on stage to present the award for Best Documentary. In the lead up to the nominees, the comedian was cracking jokes when he referenced Jada Pinkett Smith’s appearance. Smith’s husband then walked onto the stage and slapped Rock before returning to his seat and starting the show where he left off.

After a few awards, Smith ended up winning Best Actor for his role as Richard Williams in Warner’s King Richard.

“I want to apologize to the Academy, I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment and I’m not crying to win an award, it’s not about winning an award for me. It’s about being able to shine a light on all people.” [his cast and crew] “To King Richard, Venus, Serena, and all the Williams family,” Smith said during his acceptance speech.

He added, “Art imitates life. I look like a crazy dad, like they said about Richard Williams. But love will make you do crazy things. For my mom, a lot of this moment is really complicated for me, but for me my mom… It’s in Philly watching.” “My family, my wife, I take so much time. Thank you for the honor, thank you for this moment, thank you on behalf of Richard and the entire Williams family. I hope the Academy will invite me again, thank you.”
