For the first time since the original publication in 1977, JRR Tolkien’s The Silmarillion has received a color-coded version. Furthermore, the paintings and drawings that complement the text come from Tolkien himself. Given the huge success of The Lord of The Rings Illustrated Edition released last year, it’s no surprise that The Silmarillion is getting a similar treatment from HarperCollins.

In addition to Tolkien’s art, the new Silmarillion Illustrated edition features two-color printed text along with an introductory letter written by Tolkien in 1951 that “provides a fine exposition of earlier eras.” Pre-orders for The Silmarillion Illustrated Edition hardcover are Live here on amazon Now for $45.97, which is 29% off list price. Note that you will not be charged until shipped (release date October 25th), and you will automatically receive the largest discount that occurs during the pre-order period.

Tolkien began working on the stories in The Silmarillion during World War I, and continued to work on them long after the Lord of the Rings trilogy was published. After Tolkien’s death in 1973, his son Christopher Tolkien edited and compiled these works into the book we know today.

The new video release also comes at a time when interest is growing in JRR Tolkien’s work ahead of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power series’ debut on Amazon Prime Video. The series takes place thousands of years before The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, during the Second Age of Middle-earth. It begins during a period of relative peace after defeating Morgoth, lord of Sauron. The series narrates the life and adventures of the cast, promising to visit the Mist Mountains, the forest capital Lyndon, and the shores of the island kingdom of Nimenor.
