Amazon has announced a new PS5 restock, which is for the $400 digital PS5. Just as in 2021 and 2020 before it, buying a PS5 was very difficult in 2022. Between limited inventory, high demand, and a healthy distributor market, buying a PS5 is as hard as ever, and that goes doubly true to the $400 digital PS5. By sacrificing the drive, the digital PS5 is $100 cheaper than the standard PS5. We don’t know if it’s more desirable because of this. What we do know is that Sony makes significantly fewer units compared to the standard PS5, likely because it makes less profit on the $400 model. In fact, he’s almost certain to lose money on this version, as taking the drive out of the console saves Sony about $15 in manufacturing costs, which hardly affects the $100 difference. Selling consoles at a loss is a very risky business. Hypothetically, if Sony sold 10 million consoles at a loss of $50, that’s a loss of $500,000,000. This brings us today, a new digital restock for the PS5 from Amazon.

We can’t remember the last time Amazon or any other retailer got a digital restock of the PS5, but tomorrow, March 30th at 8AM PT, it will. We don’t know how much stock Amazon has but expect to sell it within minutes, possibly seconds if sellers with stock-devouring bots emerge en masse, which is a possibility. And of course, also prepare for a wide variety of technical issues.

As always, we’ll keep you posted as Amazon provides more information, but for now, that’s all that’s being provided and that seems to be all you’ll be sharing about the event.
