Fans on social media don’t like Razzie staying put, or the way the Razzies handled inquiries, responding with a statement that was widely seen as disrespectful, and then double down on it.
Rumors started circulating last week that Willis left his starring role in big feature films behind due to memory issues, choosing instead to do glorified things in movies where he only had to work a day or two and then leave. The truth behind those rumors emerged yesterday, when members of the Willis family revealed that he has aphasia, a cognitive disorder that affects the way an individual communicates, including speech.
“The Razzies are truly sorry about the diagnosis of Bruce Willis,” the Razzie family wrote on Twitter. “Maybe this explains why he wants to come out strong in 2021. Best wishes to Bruce and his family.”
The Razzies created a special award at this year’s gala, titled “Worst Bruce Willis Performance in Film 2021,” Willis’ performance in cosmic sin “Won.” The award was presented the day before the Oscars. The Razzies explained that they only learned of Willis’ diagnosis yesterday, and that the category was for 2021, and was never intended to be an ongoing category. Willis previously won two Razzies, in 1992 and 1999.
Al-Razi’s statement drew criticism from fans, particularly their suggestion to “come out hard”. Instead of deleting them and issuing an apology, as some on Twitter have requested, they released a number of statements aimed at clarifying their intentions, and it appears to have made matters worse.
In a statement to TheWrap, the organization said, “Whoever handles Willis’ affairs may not have been allowed to do so much work in such a short time, especially if they had known about his situation. In Willis’ defence, his representatives should have better watched his legacy.”
