James Marsden on acting vs. CGI

at Sonic the Hedgehog 2, James Marsden reprise his role as Tom Wachowski, Sheriff of Green Hills. In the first movie, Tom and Sonic become close friends (although they aren’t close friends, because Tom’s dog beats Sonic). In the movies, Ben Schwartz has voiced Sonic, and Marsden has to act alongside the CGI character, which should present some difficulties for the actor! In an interview with ComicBook.com’s Chris Killian, Marsden spoke about whether or not this stifled his ability to improvise.

“Yeah, we do have these opportunities to kind of fiddle with it,” Marsden said. “But like the script was so perfect when we got in. You go in, and you get what’s written on the page.” Marsden went on to reveal that Sonic had a place in the film, which would read Schwartz’s lines with him. The actor also mentions that director Jeff Fowler and producers have been supportive when it comes to improvisation.

“As long as we find something new and interesting, they’re really open to it and trust us that we’re not going to be some improv artist who comes up with bad ideas. There’s a kind of fun frolic in the set.”

Of course, it’s worth noting that Marsden has a history of working with CGI characters, which were previously featured in Jump In 2011, and then sonic the hedgehog It’s 2020. At this point, Marsden looks like a professional dealing with CGI characters, but it’s interesting to get a glimpse of the impact on his acting ability. It remains to be seen how the audience will feel about the final product, and whether or not the best jokes got into the movie, but with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Set to hit theaters on April 8th, fans won’t have to wait any longer to find out! Until then, readers can check out all of our previous coverage of the movie here.
