The new PlayStation Report has good news about PS3 backwards compatibility on PS5. The weird architecture of the PS3 has haunted the PlayStation for many years. Not only did it cause a headache for developers during the PS3 generation, but it was a pain on the PlayStation side who couldn’t emulate PS3 on PS4 or PS5, meaning backwards compatibility was limited to streaming via PlayStation Now. PlayStation gamers had been hoping this would change with the new PlayStation Plus, but this was announced recently without any word on backwards compatibility for PS3. However, according to a new report, PS3 backwards compatibility is coming to PS5, although it looks like it won’t be full backwards compatibility and seems like a nightmare for PlayStation.

Well, the report claims that because of the architecture of the PS3 and how many developers have had to publish various tricks and solutions to work with it. So, instead of just creating a single emulator for all the PS3 games, Sony basically has to build their own emulator by the studio. Not only is this a lot of work but it does ensure that when PS3 backwards compatibility arrives, it will be limited, perhaps quite a bit on the first party. Some games are still better than no games for the many PlayStation fans who were desperate to revisit some of the classic games confined to PS3.
For now, though, this is all unofficial information, which means it should be taken with caution, but it’s in line with the recent grumbling about PS3 backwards compatibility somewhat imminent and that the unique design of the PS3 has made PS3 backwards compatibility complicated. Extremely.
